Well you remember wrong. It was called eBay on the Road. I went to a few to help out. I enjoyed it and had fun. All they needed help for was at registration to check off people's name on a list, greet them, give them their goodie bag and to talk to other eBayers. Most people are excited to talk about things they're passionate about. And frankly, some of the volunteers knew better how to answer the questions than eBay staff did. We use the system far more than they do.
They did the set up and take down. We didn't touch that stuff. Admission was sold in advance and for the rare person who needed to pay at the entrance, only eBay staff took that. We hardly did anything. It was like going to a club for people of like minded interests. It was a gabfest.
You make it sound like they were looking for people to do everything with nothing in return, they weren't. And as a thank you for going you got to listen to the presentation without charge and they gave you a whole bunch of eBay swag. Much more than a notepad and pen.
When you find doing what's right hard to do - you've got a problem.
