Take them to a coin dealer* and ask for an appraisal.

Start buy phoning and ask each dealer if he does appraisals for estate purposes.

This tells him you are not looking to sell. Estate value is usually the value at auction, since it is not uncommon for the family to divide the estate based on roughly equal value of goods (Fred gets the coins, Mary gets the stamps, Harry gets the Royal Doulton, etc.)

Make an appointment. Keep the appointment.

The appraisal will be faster than you think. Most active dealers do one or two appraisals every day, often more.

You will be asked to stay during the appraisal. This is for the dealer's protection, not yours.

You will pay for the appraisal.

You should get a written appraisal on the dealer's letterhead, with the catalogue numbers and value for that grade.

Remember the coins were bought retail. You will be selling wholesale.

*Not a collector. Dealers know the market.
