fee that ebay charges the sellers on top of their listing commision is this true?
Yes, eBay is now charging a 9% fee on shipping and handling fees. This was promoted as being a control on sellers who were avoiding fees by having low asking prices coupled with very high S&H. The practice made many buyers very angry, since their "cheap" dollar item was shipped for $10, or even $100.
its getting to the point that the shipping cost is more than the items bought
The cost of postage has nothing to do with the value of the item. Postage is based first on the size and weight of the item, then on the service provided. Some services offer insurance and Delivery Confirmation. If you are buying from the USA, these are options for the seller. Domestically, this might add a buck or less, but Internationally, say to Canada, this service starts around $20-$25.
shipping costs have went up 3 fold in the last few years
While there have been rises in Post Office charges, much of what you think you are seeing is either an (emotional) decision by US sellers to use Delivery Confirmation to Canada. There also have been some changes to dimensions for some services, which may have raised or lowered the shipping cost.
You may see more and more sellers using "Free Shipping" which really means the (domestic) shipping is included in the item price. And really, that is what the smart shopper must do.
BEFORE BIDDING, check that the seller has listed a shipping fee to your location and add it to the asking price. You may find the total is still acceptable, even a deal. Or you may decide to shop locally.
BTW- be careful with overseas sellers. Cheap goods are often sent "Free", but if the item is unacceptable, it will cost the unhappy buyer at least $40 to return the item with the Delivery Confirmation Paypal requires in a Dispute. Keep this in mind when bidding overseas.

yes i see what you are saying if you want it,buy it and pay the price! but why is the shipping cost quoted always a lot higher than the acual posted in the listing? a package delivered via usps showed a quote of $50.00 acual cost 35.00 the 15.00 is a lot more than 9%! and this is constanly happening and i have yet to see a refund on extra costs from any seller! and to me a few extra $s to the seller is minor if he gives good service, ships fast ect i feel its just gouging from the multinatinal companys "cause they can" free shipping? i have yet to see any free shipping to canada and if a seller offers free shipping in the U.S.A. and the price of the item includes this cost then why wouldnt the seller knock off the U.S.A. part? never seen it yet and say what you wish but shipping has went up a lot in the last 2 or 3 years size, weight hasnt changed in the items i have bought just the cost

Can ANYONE tell me how you're supposed to quote shipping charges when you have NO idea where it's going ?
I have maybe 50 lbs. of collectors magazines I'd like to post, I know shipping will be very expensive, but how in the hell do you calculate it when you don't know if it's going 5 miles or 5,000 ?

If a bidder sees an item they like and think their bid plus shipping is reasonable, they should complain about the actual shipping once the item arrives because once they bid, they are agreeing to the shipping regardless of how high it is.
Remember this, what you pay in shipping is not conditional. If $50 is shown in the listing and you bid, you pay $50 even if it only cost $1.00. Ebay doesn't even investigate claims of excessive shipping once you bid because you agreed to it.
In case you are not aware of it, many, many years ago, USPS would not raise their rates very often. In fact, it would many years between price hikes. That's not true anymore. I think USPS has raised their prices probably 8 times in the past 10 years.
One more thing. If you bought a bowling ball for $1.00, how much do you think shipping would be, less than $1.00? No! It would be based on the weight, size, shipping method and shipping destination and it would cost a lot more than $1.00.

So, what I'm getting from this discussion is if I'm in Vancouver, B.C., and I post a heavy package = lots of shipping , I should post the same shipping fees regardless of whether it's going to Katmandu or Calgary, right ?
I believe in the K.I.S.S. Principle, Keep It Simple for Stupids. Me !

so just to remind every one the original question was "why is ebay adding on a 9% surcharge for shipping ?" i have to laugh when i get comments that i am aggreeing to a shipping cost when i bid but on the other side of the boarder your ship costs are 1/4 of what we pay by the time it gets here to canada and if its shipped ups or fed-ex dont forget all the boarder fees also i thought ebay made their $ on the listing commision but as far as i remember i dont recall this ever being announced and why should i have to ask for a refund on over priced shipping in the 1st place? is there no honesty any more? just because the shipping is listed as $50.00 and the acual cost is $35.00 why is it the sellers right to profit on the extra cost? at one time sellers would get kicked off for "high priced shipping costs now it seems to be norm and just because this cost is listed, not acurate, and wrong does it make it right for a seeler to keep it?
