That's when the seller has made the listing private.  If you look at the sellers feedback instead of the items to click on you will see a lot of words "private".   Here is eBay's policy about how it is done.  EBay does not recommend it, only in a few categories:

http://pages.ebay.ca/help/sell/private.html#when

Many people will not bid on auctions that are "private" except for very personal items because all this type of listing 'really' does is make it easier for the shiller.  If the seller can't be completely open and honest, its a bad sign.  The exception being medical things, undergarments, and so on.

The winner of an auction or the buyer of a Buy-It-Now listing has their ebay ID displayed as the purchaser. A "private" listing hides the purchaser ID.

The phrase "private listing - bidders' identities protected" only shows up in the bid history of auctions.

private bids.jpgI should have added that it only shows up in auctions. On a Buy it Now it doesn't matter if its private or not. It just looks suspicious on auctions.
