why does tracking in ebay not work properly? For example, order from China shows "China Post".

When buying through Amazon, when you click "tracking info", there's a list of when the parcel left the seller's address/post office, and each day, you can see the progress of your parcel, until it lets you know that your parcel is waiting for you to pick it up at your local post office.

In Ebay, when you click "Tracking", it shows where your package first left the postal facility, and that's it. You can click tracking for 3 weeks, and you only get the same info, ie. China Post. It does not show you the progress of where your parcel is day to day, in fact it does not show you anything other than when it was brought to a post office. So frustrating! This could be a lot better, like Amazon's. After 3 weeks, I have no idea where this particular parcel is. With Amazon, I would know where it was yesterday, and how far it has travelled today. That's how eBay's tracking should also be set up. Just a comment, wish Ebay would make their tracking actually work.

The life lesson here don't buy from China... I highly doubt that any package from China has consistent tracking info (if any!).

If you do receive your package it will be 4-6 weeks for delivery.

If your buying from Canada or the USA you will have regular tracking updates which would be more suitable for you.

Shop in Canada, USA, Europe and Australia.

I don't need tracking to tell me that I don't have the item or that it's waiting for me to pick up at the post office.  I can tell that I don't have the item, and I get a pick up notice in my mailbox if I miss the carrier's attempt to delivery my package to my door.

I'm assuming you're comparing "eBay's" tracking to that of shipments sent directly by Amazon as I recently purchased an item from an Amazon seller that wasn't tracked at all.

And that's the thing with eBay.  Unlike Amazon, it's a patchwork quilt of sellers from all over who use various shipping methods that may or may not have functioning tracking.  eBay doesn't have much control over that.  Because you're purchasing from Amazon itself, it has a lot more control over the shipping method chosen and can crack down on their shippers if those shippers are providing buyers with sub-par service.

Well, no.

What you are seeing is the Delivery Confirmation service the actual seller bought.

Not eBay.

And as marnotom! says, it's not important.

Delivery Confirmation is all that Paypal and eBay require to Protect a Seller against unwarranted non-delivery claims. Most use tracking, which is more precise, and more expensive, but that is often because, especially with international sales, tracking is very very expensive.

With Delivery Confirmation the parcel is (usually) recorded when it is handed in at the PO and again when the carrier has delivered it.

Which is all the seller, eBay and Paypal need to know if there is a Dispute.

The real question is: WHERE IS YOUR PURCHASE?

Has it been more than 20 days since payment (30 days for Asian purchases)?

If so go to the Resolution Centre at the bottom of this page and open an Item Not Received Dispute.

The first step is a suggestion to contact your seller, but I gather you have done that.

If not, ask him the shipping service he used, the date of shipment and the tracking number (again- although it is really useless to you, this question puts the fear of Ghu into scammers.)

If he does not respond usefully, and a useful response is an immediate refund of your entire payment, escalate your Dispute to a Claim.

Don't get into a discussion with the seller/

Do NOT accept an offer of a replacement, it won't arrive.

If the seller cannot prove delivery (not shipping, delivery) you will be refunded.

The proof of delivery (tracking , Delivery Confirmation) is a Seller Protection.

If you are not home when the carrier attempts delivery, she will leave you a Notice telling you where and when you can pick up the parcel. Bring ID.

BTW, I have over the decades, had a few refunds from eBay for items that never arrived.

Amazon still owes me for  a $20 book I bought last winter and has done nothing about a refund.

eBay has limited support for tracking services, and even those are often delayed. Just from memory, the only services I have even seen (based on my purchases) that were able to be tracked via eBay was UPS, CanadaPost and USPS.

There are separate sites where you can track virtually any carrier.

Amazon is blue collar, eBay is working class, with all it's charms. 😉

It depends if eBay wants to spend $$$$$ to add new tracking code/engine. Probably not.
