50% UPS Brokerage fee????

I bought an item that was $99.95 US. The Seller charged me $16.00 for UPS standard shipping to Canada.

The package arrived and here is a Brokerage C.O.D. due to UPS for $54.17. What a rip! The seller said nothing about additional fees due IN ADDITION to the $16.00 I paid him for the shipping. By looking under Help in eBay, I see there is nothing I can do about it.

In the overall scheme of things, a courier company is not a postal system.

Canada Post moves "MAIL"

Courier companies move "SHIPMENTS"

So you are implying that UPS can't move "mail" and Canada Post can't move "shipments".

Riiight...

CPs revenue from parcel shipment is only slightly lower then from transaction mail.

Yes the fees the couriers charge are a ripoff.

The courier companies CAN and DO move mail, however they charge more than 52cents for a letter - I believe Purolator is something along the lines of $10 for a Puroletter, perhaps more.

Yes, Canada Post moves shipped goods - however, they move them by MAIL routes, not by COURIER routes.

With more private citizens becoming involved with shipping items via courier in the past few years, rather than companies, it would be a good idea for the courier companies to take a look at their stats and see if they can work out a closer-to-nominal rate for private citizens moving items between themselves - as opposed to businesses moving shipments between businesses.

I would imagine this would be a slight mega headache to set up and control.

Small businesses will then be saying "but we're just a small company and we only have 3 people working for us and we need a break, can't we ship for private citizen rate with you too?"

Of course, if you're going to be taking on a "cause" to be fighting for, why not take on the Canada Income Tax Act which supposedly was instituted during wartime to help out the country's coffers that were becoming depleted .. and here we are how many decades later still paying it?

I love how canuckchat is constantly defending UPS,

Every time I receive a package through FED EX, I don't get ANY type of fee, and that has been over 15 packages in the last 3 years. Every single USPS package, well over 30, only a few fees of less than $10

No charges with purolator.

3 packages UPS, 3 Fees of over $50.

but according to Canuckchat "It's a business people, not a scam"

Go figure.

Also the guy who said how he deliberately left the value unmarked, only for the UPS guy to fill it in for him at $100 value is complete evidence that UPS, is in favor of ripping people off. A REAL EMPLOYEE would have asked, what is the value of this item, and then filled it in.

Merely explaining business to you, not "defending" - and no idea why you did not get similar charges with Fedex, as we do with our Fedex parcels.

I was unaware of this till today when I became another victim of UPS. I bought a textbook for $45 from a US seller hoping to save some money. The item was delivered very fast, I will give that to UPS, it came in three days. However when the UPS man came to my door he asked for another $35, I was shocked. I paid him as I had no choice, I needed the text and did not want to lose my $45 be sending it back to the seller. I checked the invoice, item value was $45 which is correct and the GST (Canadian tax) was only $2.80, the rest was "brokerage fees", so basically UPS pocked $32.20 for doing nothing. I contacted the seller and told him the story, he was a very understanding guy, we had split the shipping expense for faster shipping and from his email you could tell he had no clue what UPS was doing. The guy felt really bad, but its not his fault he was wondering why did I have to pay he already paid for shipping by charging me a little extra. Anyway I told him no worries next time use USPS. Wish I had seen this before, but I learnt my lesson UPS gets a thumbs down.

UPS charged you for their services in brokering YOUR parcel into Canada from an international destination.

You would have paid $5 if the seller had sent it USPS as Canada Post has a flat negotiated rate of $5 for brokering parcels into the country.

..by the way... what kind of job do YOU have? do you do your work for nothing? are you in retail and a sales clerk? do you check people out at the cash register for nothing? are you a computer programmer? do you write programs for nothing?

.. I am not a courier company nor a brokerage firm .. however, I DO understand that nothing in this life is FREE! If you want a service (fast courier delivery in this case) you pay a price.

SHENOY43 was just sharing a common statement in this thread in case you hadn't noticed. People are getting ripped off because they are unaware of the exhorbitant fees charged by UPS!

What do you do for a living canuckchat? Actually it doesn't matter, you already made the point. UPS charged $35 whereas USPS would have charged $5. Do you not see something wrong there? If you are a plumber and charge $35/hr. and I can get the exact same service for $5/hr. who am I going to choose? Not you.

This thread is educating people not to use UPS. Their catch phrase of "What can Brown do for you?" should be changed to "How can Brown rip you off today?"

.. I've worked in various industries including manufacturing ... transportation ... construction ... small business ... and you don't go around saying "XYZ RIPPED ME OFF" when you don't educate yourself FIRST about the costs involved between using XYZ or ABC or DEF companies ... UPS, FEDEX, DHL, they are all providing a service ... they get to CHARGE for that service ... just like any other business ... you can go buy a widget at WalMart or you can go buy a widget at Neiman Marcus .... educate yourself as to the PRICES first... and don't WHINE!

plus ... "Canadians read first before buying from the USA" thread has been consistently on the first page of this forum... my "ME" page outlines that couriers will charge brokerage fees ... my Blog (linked from my "ME" page as well as sometimes in the forums in my sig) outlines brokerage charges with couriers ... so its surely not a big secret!

Well good for you to be so widely educated.

Like many many others I just paid the shipping charge NOT knowing how the item was going to be sent. Sure I could have asked, but never dealt with UPS before in my life I still would not have known how grossly they overcharge for their service.

Many people are learning because of this thread and your other one. Nobody is whining. You have made your point over and over and over about UPS being in business. OK we get it; stop already.

CannuckChat - I am not naive enough to think you get anything for free, however I like to be informed upfront about charges. You may be a rich person and $30 means nothing to you, to me its not change its real money. If I am told upfront about the fees I would have looked for alternate arrangement, I don't think this is asking for too much. However don't you think UPS should inform a customer about their fees? Anyway you may be a experienced pro wih eBay, I am new to this and don't know all these things.

- it is not just EBAY where you run into this

- try ordering from a retail outlet in the USA and you will oftentimes receive the item via courier, which will in MANY cases result in brokerage charges on top of the taxes due (not all are like this, a few will incorporate the brokerage and taxes into the S&H cost of the item and remit these for you)

- i am far from rich

- YOU are the consumer, YOU need to educate yourself, nobody is going to do it for you, least of all UPS or FEDEX
