Hi, I live in Vancouver and sometimes I want to buy items from the United States from sellers who are using the Global Shipping Program. It is easy for me to pick up items from the Canada Post office but not receive items from private courier companies, as delivering to my entrance requires a detour and couriers just don't want to make the effort. Sometimes they just hand my packages to neighbours. So in summary I want to receive items from Canada Post. Is there a type of shipping that I can request of GSP U.S. sellers (signature required?) so the deliveries are handed off to Canada Post and not a private courier company? Thank you.

Ask the Seller if they will ship not using the GSP, many of them do not want to, others will. Some may not even reply to your request...
And for myself, items that I have purchased using the GSP have always been delivered by Canada Post to my home, never a courier service.
But I only purchase "lots" never single items with GSP.

There is no way of requesting a specific delivery for the gsp.

Seeing as the Global Shipping Program appears to support delivery to Canadian post office boxes (which makes sense given that Canadians who live in rural/remote communities not served by couriers might have post office box delivery only) and you don't seem to mind going to the post office to collect packages, you may want to consider getting a Canada Post "FlexDelivery" PO Box address, which would, in theory at least, eliminate the possibility of getting a carrier that doesn't deliver to PO boxes.
Please note that I don't have any experience of doing this myself, so I don't know how well this would work with an urban post office box. However, this is the only way I can think of to try "railroading" the GSP into directing an item to Canada to the postal system if alternatives exist.
Info on FlexDelivery can be found here and on linked pages:

Note that if we use FlexDelivery, we have a very odd looking address.
Just signed DH up for one, which will do no good for the current shipment he is waiting for.
Like this:
Mr. F. Fan
PO Box 99900 DE 1***4*
PO 9
Victoria BC V8R 0A6
The stars are numbers. The postal code is the local postal outlet.
A lot of my customers "disguise" their PO boxes as "unit numbers"
So:
Mrs. Ima Buyer
#333 - 123 Mail Street
Anytown AL USA
90210
where a Google Map search shows 123 Mail Street to be a strip mall with a post office or a MailboxesR Us outlet.
