Paypal Offering Free Returns in Canada program 'Return Shipping On Us'

Paypal's Return Shipping on Us program. New as far as I am aware. It looks promising for people who use paypal to fund virtually all of their online purchases. Like me.

Limit of 12 requests per year which seems more than reasonable from all standpoints. Full details below.

I've signed up. If the day ever arises that I have to use this, I'll let you know how it goes. But a program like this offered through paypal will be a godsend to buyers waiting 90 days to get their ebay item from overseas only to discover it's a total hunk of junk on arrival. Their SNADS can be sent back through this, as far as I can tell. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

Although it does beg the question whether the seller will be on the hook for SNAD returns. I don't think payPAL could make a change like that without updating their User Agreement: put sellers on the hook for Return Postage without prior warning.

Where did you see this? Went to PayPal's site & couldn't find anything about it. Wouldn't be surprised if the seller ends up paying for the return somehow.

This has been around for a couple of years or longer in the US.  When it came out I checked to see if it was available for Canadians and I “think” that it was but I’m not 100% positive about that.   I don’t recall anyone  on the US boards mentioning that they used it so I don’t think it’s well known.  

As as far as being used for a snad, they don’t cover shipping if the merchant already offers free return shipping. Since ebay basically does offer it for snads, I’ve always thought that this PP program wouldn’t cover snads but I’m not 100% certain on that.

Can I use the Return Shipping on Us service if the seller or merchant already offers a similar service?

No. The Return Shipping on Us service applies when a free return shipping or return shipping refund service is not offered by the seller or merchant from whom You made Your purchase. If the seller or merchant from whom You made Your purchase offers a free return shipping or return shipping refund service by regular postal mail, courier, or any other return shipping options or services, You must use that service.

  Under what conditions can I not use the Return Shipping on Us service?

Purchases of items for which the return by post regular mail, courier or any other regular shipping options or services is already paid.

PayPal pays for the returns in this program, not the seller.

Thank you, I remember when it was announced to some fanfare for US-residents a few years ago.  I think I remember they were planning to expand to Canada. That time is now.

Yes, ebay funds return shipping for SNADS that are filed within the 30-day money back guarantee  deadline but so often on the boards here we hear from buyers who waited patiently four months to get their item (because their seller asked them to wait that long) and then found their order contained what they did not purchase. This covers those folks as well as plain, old remorse returns. 

As a seller, I don't love remorse returns but if paypal can fund return shipping for the buyer through this program and therefore reduce the chances I'll be on the receiving end of a false SNAD, I'm happy.

There is the $30 maximum refund on shipping -- overseas tracked (as you know) can easily exceed that limit.

Very true. Thank you for pointing that out, I overlooked it. I do still think that a $30-subsidy on tracked postage back to China would help make that Return easier to bear if I felt like I was ripped off on that $345 Guddi purse that I bought and waited eight weeks to receive.

I’m sure there are times when it will benefit someone.  In many cases though the eta on listings from China on listings is up to 45 business days so an item that arrived in 8 or 10 weeks would still be within the eBay claim time. Regardless, it’s nice to have PP program as a back up.

I don't order from China more than once every five years.

The last time I did, my order didn't arrive within the extended Estimated Delivery date given to me by ebay.

There was nowhere, however, that allowed me to open that MBG claim. It was ineligible even though it fell within the 30-days rule because it had been so long between purchase and the EDD.

I know that's not the way it's supposed to work but that's how it worked in that case. I had no choice but to open by INR via Paypal. Had this then been a high-value item that arrived and was SNAD, I'd still have had to use paypal. It was too late for the MBG even though it was not supposed to be. I counted the days.

What options should have been there for me as the buyer had vanished due to purchase age.

From what I have been able to gather from my own experience and others, The 30 Day MBG technically is limited to a 60 day period from the date of sale or ship date. So if the shipment is estimated to be 90 days (don't laugh it happens) you will NEVER be able to claim MBG so long as eBay maintains whatever windows of delivery. Then, silently, once 60 days passes, all options are removed even though eBay themselves placed the ridiculous "ETA".

But I mean, they gotta make money somehow right? 😉

That coincides with my experience exactly. Despite the assurance the the MBG extends to 30-days past the last available Estimated Date of Delivery, if that EDD is beyond 60 days, the buyer is out of luck if the item either doesn't arrive or is not as described. 

I know that's not supposed to be how it works but that's what happened to me. I was taken aback. And then I filed my claim with Paypal because I already know that's what I'm supposed to do but I bet there are countless other buyers who are new and don't know any better who just leave, angry about it and minus their funds and orders.

I went to the link and clicked the link that says free to join, and it just goes to the same page. In the help files it says
“Here’s how to activate the Return Shipping on Us feature.
Go to our activation page and click Click here to activate.
Log in to your account when prompted.
Click Visit the refund request page to get started with Return Shipping on Us.”.
There’s no link to an activation page.
Help please.
