Latest Falwell letter:

Everybody Claiming to Know Jesus

I was intrigued to observe a sign being held by one of the protesters at the writers strike in California this week. Scrawled under a sign bearing the Writers Guild of America logo was the message: “Huckabee, Jesus Wouldn’t Cross.”

The protester’s message was being aimed at Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee, a Christian, who crossed picket lines on Wednesday to appear on NBC’s “The Tonight Show,” prior to Thursday’s Iowa caucus.

And it struck me that, in this present age of situational ethics and moral ambivalence, man is continually attempting to create Jesus in his own image, usually to fit the circumstances or states of affairs in which he finds himself.

We often hear conflicting arguments that Jesus would be a Republican or a Democrat if He were living on earth today.

As evidence, we see books such as Clint Willis’ and Nate Hardcastle’s “Jesus Is Not a Republican: The Religious Right’s War on America” or Mark Ellingsen’s “When Did Jesus Become Republican?” We also see Alan Colmes’ book, “Red, White and Liberal,” which contains a chapter (“Jesus was a Liberal”) in which he attempts to define Jesus as a social liberal.

We also hear people insinuating that Jesus would be driving a hybrid car if He were on the earth today. Or we hear that Jesus would be working to help the oppressed people of our world.

Moreover, I believe that even within the church today we often see depictions of Jesus that are simply unfounded.

The fact is that opinions of Jesus don’t really matter.

The only thing that matters in our understanding of Jesus is what He told us of Himself in His Word, the Bible. And the Bible must be our only standard in our endeavors to understand Jesus, the Son of the Living God, and His purpose for our lives.

In this regard, it is important to note that Jesus did not come to earth to teach us what car to drive or which candidate to vote for or to compel us not to cross picket lines.

Instead, Jesus came for one simple reason, as He stated in Luke 19:10: “For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.”

That statement applies to all of us, for we are all lost without Jesus Christ in our lives.

Jesus did certainly outline plans for the disciples (and hence the present church) to care for widows, the affirmed and the disadvantaged. But this was not His principal message.

I fear that many people these days are using modern social guidelines such as “inclusiveness” or “multi-culturalism” or “globalism” to define Jesus.

In effect, these individuals are attempting to socialize the Gospel, humanizing Jesus to fit their needs.

These are superficial perceptions of Jesus and have virtually nothing to do with the Bible narrative of His life and design.

And so to understand Jesus, we must first understand that He understands us even more than we understand ourselves; and we fail when we attempt to justify ourselves by recreating what the Bible makes clear about Him.

A wonderful verse is I Samuel 16:7 because it shows God’s uniqueness in His approach to mankind. That verse states: “… for man looketh upon the outside appearance, but the Lord looketh upon the heart.”

And the heart is where we truly find Jesus and His purpose.

When we trust in Christ, we then know the purpose of Christ.

Paul, writing to the church at Ephesus, explained the beauty of truly knowing Jesus: “And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fullness of God.”
My prayer for this New Year is that I can reach out in love with this message to many people so that they can truly know Jesus Christ as He wants to be known.
Let's all work together in this effort!

Hi Valve--Always nice to "see" you. I don't always agree with you, but I do admire how you present your views.

Hope everyone is enjoying the new year. Very blustery and chilly on the Island. At least it wasn't raining, so it was a good day for a long walk.

Kim, hope all is well at your house and you are managing to get some rest between those long shifts. Your Mom must be very pleased with herself to have gathered her strength and made it to her GD's wedding. I know you are proud of her. She is quite a woman.

Back to school and work for many tomorrow. Hope everyone managed to squeeze in enough good times and enough sleep to restore their souls for these next months.

At least we are heading towards the light these days.

I received this e-mail from a friend of mine and wanted to share it.I found it quite interesting.

Folks this is the Month that we RE-TAKE AMERICA

Keep this going around the globe ... read it and forward every time you receive it. We can't give up on this issue.

Paul Harvey and Prayer

Paul Harvey says:

I don't believe in Santa Claus, but I'm not going to sue somebody for singing a Ho-Ho-Ho song in December. I don't agree with Darwin , but I didn't go out and hire a lawyer when my high school teacher taught his Theory of Evolution

Life, liberty or your pursuit of happiness will not be endangered because someone says a 30-second prayer before a football game.
So what' s the big deal? It's not like somebody is up there reading the entire book of Acts. They're just talking to a God they believe in and asking him to grant safety to the players on the field and the fans going home from the game.

But it's a Christian prayer, some will argue.

Yes, and this is the United States of America , a country founded on Christian principles. According to our very own phone book, Christian churches outnumber all others better than 200-to-1. So what would you expect -- somebody chanting Hare Krishna?

If I went to a football game in Jerusalem , I would expect to hear a Jewish prayer.
If I went to a soccer game in Baghdad , I would expect to hear a Muslim prayer.
If I went to a ping pong match in China , I would expect to hear someone pray to Buddha.
And I wouldn't be offended.
It wouldn't bother me one bit.
When in Rome ...

But what about the atheists? Is another argument.
What about them?
Nobody is asking them to be baptized. We're not going to pass the collection plate. Just humor us for 30 seconds. If that's asking too much, bring a Walkman or a pair of ear plugs. Go to the bathroom. Visit the concession stand. Call your lawyer!

Unfortunately, one or two will make that call. One or two will tell thousands what they can and cannot do. I don't think a short prayer at a football game is going to shake the world's foundations.

Christians are just sick and tired of turning the other cheek while our courts strip us of all our rights. Our parents and grandparents taught us to pray before eating; to pray before we go to sleep.
Our Bible tells us to pray without ceasing. Now a handful of people and their lawyers are telling us to cease praying.
God, help us.
And if that last sentence offends you, well ... just sue me

The silent majority has been silent too long. It's time we let that one or two who scream loud enough to be heard that the vast majority doesn't care what they want. It is time the majority rules! It's time we tell them, you don't have to pray; you don't have to say the pledge of allegiance; you don't have to believe in God or attend services that honor Him. That is your right, and we will honor your right . But by golly, you are no longer going to take our rights away. We are fighting back....and we WILL WIN!

God bless us one and all ... especially those who denounce Him, God bless America , despite all her faults. She is still the greatest nation of all.

God bless our service men who are fighting to protect our right to pray and worship God.

2007 will be the year the silent majority is heard and we put God back as the foundation of our families and institutions . and our Military come home from all the wars.

Keep looking up.
If you agree with this, please pass it on.
If not delete it.

Yes, and this is the United States and CANADA, two countries founded on Christian principles.

Actually, if I may, sorry to break it to you valve but the USA was Not founded on Christian principles. I could go into a long explanation but maybe these links will save a lot of typing. http://www.nobeliefs.com/Tripoli.htm and .. http://www.infidels.org/library/modern/farrell_till/myth.html and … http://boards.historychannel.com/thread.jspa?threadID=800033594 .

There are many more examples of these facts.

The US and Canada are secular countries “Not specifically relating to religion or to a religious body”. Other countries such as Saudi Arabia are non-secular. If someone wants to live in a non-secular country then planes leave for Saudi Arabia every day, but remember that in non-secular countries you also have to live with what comes with this type of mentality…..inequality, injustices, prejudice and bigotry.

With regards to eagle’s post from Paul Harvey….it is totally FALSE…. http://www.snopes.com/politics/soapbox/prayer.asp.

The basics behind these things coming on the Internet and through other means is based on Fear….and most often it has bigotry and prejudice lurking in the shadows. Because the US and Canada are both secular countries then No ONE religion should have more rights or preferences over another, especially in any areas of ‘govern’ment. No one group should ‘govern’ over another. I will admit that I do see at times that people get carried away with trying to be Too politically correct Eg: stores who want to say Happy Season instead of Merry Christmas….there is always the extreme on either side. However generally speaking I see no problem with restricting the use of religious content in other areas, because it is fair and just for all concerned. Religion to me has always been a personal thing and not meant to infringe on the lives and rights of others. Last Saturday a van pulled into my driveway and when the door opened two men in suits got out and walked to my door. I knew who they were just looking at the security camera…briefcase in one hand and books in the other. I went to the door (done this before) and no sooner was it opened than they started their sales pitch for their religion. But I just stood there and listened, more interested in the psychology of these two people than the pitter patter of their words. Then when they ran out of breath I moved aside and pointed to the symbol of my belief hanging on the wall behind me…..you could have heard a pin drop. Then I was told that I was ‘with Satan’, that I needed to be saved or I was going south in a handbasket. I said nothing….walked out to their van….opened the sliding door…..and told them the way out is the way they came in. I live in Canada, that secular country that I mentioned earlier and frankly I resent not only the intrusion in my life of people selling at my door, but I also resent their accusations about my beliefs. They can consider themselves lucky that they caught me after I had had three cups of coffee.

However back to this false Paul Harvey article for a moment and some of the comments within it by whoever wrote it…….Eg: praying before a football game. I’m curious…..why is there this necessity to have everyone stop to pray to this One supposed god? What about all the other people at that game….the Buddhists, the Muslims and many others? Should their beliefs not be equally given time in a Secular country? There is probably Buddhist and Muslim players etc etc on the field and equally supporters of these teams and religions in the stands. Maybe we should stop and have a moment of prayer to cover all the bases, so to speak. When one religion is recognized, especially in large gatherings, then it says that this one religion is thee most important above all others. Is religion not a personal relationship between a person and whatever god they choose to believe in?…..,Then my feeling is pray to yourself. Your god will hear you.

"Not founded on Christian principles"

That statement probably would have been more palatable and less controversial for you if it had read, "Christian values". The ten commandments provide values if all followed them, this would be a heaven on earth!
"It came to me that every time I lose a dog they take a piece of my heart with them. And every new dog who comes into my life gifts me with a piece of their heart. If I live long enough, all the components of my heart will be dog, and I will become as generous and loving as they are."--Unknown

The ten commandments has some validity in it’s text but in other areas it does not. Simply put…..my goddess isn’t your god…..don’t inflict your god on me and I will gladly reciprocate.

There are many good aspects within all religions. None is perfect.

With regards to the ten commandments it can also boil down to translation. There is the Exodus version and the Deuteronomy version. In Deuteronomy for instance it says that your god is a jealous god…..(I have no use for any invisible being who is jealous and yet tells his followers they should not be). ‘He’ also says that children should be punished to the third and fourth generations for the actions of parents and great grandparents……(what type of god would punish innocent children as revenge for the actions of others Pfffft!) In both versions of the commandments it says that you shall keep the sabbath holy and basically not work……but if the commandments should be followed as you suggest then do you have any idea how many Christians work on the sabbath?….employ people to work on the sabbath?….and shop at stores which requires people to work on the sabbath? So if you’re going to talk the talk….. walk the walk. At least the Orthodox Jews follow their beliefs. Then when it comes to thou shalt not kill……well I didn’t see any if’s, but’s ands or maybe’s attached to that. Seems pretty clear to me. At least the Amish follow that commandment to the letter and many Orthodox Jews. Honour your father and mother?…..what if they are wrong? Stealing, adultery, etc etc. all preached, but few follow it and make it a way of life. Maybe the hypocrisy angers you as much as it often angers me.

The basic logic in some of the Commandments could play a definate part in making the world a better place but not all apply to all people and shouldn’t. I’m more of a ‘Do Unto Others As You Would Have Them Do Unto You’ kinda person…..unless someone does Unto me because they don’t live by what they preach and then all bets are off……and at that point they ‘reap what they have sown’….you’ve hopefully heard of this.

Welcome Eagle. Nice to "meet" you.

Kim--what wonderful pictures! It looks like a beautiful day for all involved.

Hi Christine--the winds howled and the surf pounded all night. Glad you are getting good weather--my poor jasmine is very confused. Started to bloom, and but changed its mind.

Hugs to everyone with good hearts. I am off to find the "ignore" button.
