Seller ended auction about 5 days early and since I placed my bid I was hoping to be outbid because I no longer wanted the item.

I ended up paying for the item, but obviously, he took away any chances I had of hoping to be outbid by ending it almost immediately after he got my bid. What is the policy of a seller ending an item early? This does not seem fair. When I placed my bid, I saw the item had about a week to go and as soon as I bid, he ended the auction. What's up with that?

Seller can end to sell to highest bidder...

Its no different commitment than had you won as only bid. Can ask seller if they would consider a cancellation.

That doesn't sound right. If the seller ended the auction, s/he HAS TO have a reason in order for eBay to cancel the listing. Also, I don't see how you should be 'forced' to pay for it if there was time left til auction end. Call PayPal or tell the seller what you wrote here and see if they can refund you or cancel the transaction.
