Acceptable Payment methods

Is anyone aware of the acceptable payment methods changing? Apple pay has been removed from dot ca/dot com.  Discover is now missing on dot com. (Not sure when these changes were rolled out.) Do they have to be routed through PayPal to work? Do the options change at checkout?

Discover is a popular card in the US, but because it was not a "bank" card (it was originally a Sears product) it is not valid outside the USA.

I looked at a couple of my Watched items and the Discover option is there when I look at dotCOM but not on dotCA.

I didn't see ApplePay on any of them.

I'm wondering if any of this is connected to the many recent reports of buyers (known ebay documented glitch) not being able to complete purchases or EIS hiccups? Seems to be mostly when 2 countries are involved. When I check US sellers Discover is missing. Same goes for Canadian sellers that list on dot com.

Are you talking about what you see on a listing page?

If so, you will not see Apple Pay unless you are using an Apple device. If you are using an Apple device then you would see Apply Pay but not Google Pay.

Can't help you on the Discover question.

It looks the same to me unless I'm remembering wrong.  I didn't think that apple pay was visible unless you were on mobile.    Discovery and AmEx still show on my listings created on .com when viewed on .com but not on viewed on.ca.  They don't show on my .ca created listings on .com or .ca but I don't think they showed up before.  Are you saying that you used to see Discover and Amex on your listings on .com even though you list on .ca?  Maybe I've forgotten but considering that neither of those cards are that popular, I doubt that it would affect us much.

My items that were created on .ca do not show Discover, Amx or Apple Pay on .com or .ca.

I can confirm what @recped posted.  When I view listings on my iPhone with Safari, Apple Pay comes up as one of the payment options.  On the other hand, when I view listings on my iPhone with Chrome, Google Pay comes up as a payment option instead.  Go figure.

@recped

I'm seeing this on a PC in Chrome. Up until several months ago the Discover card/Apple pay displayed when I checked. I've posted screenshots in the past. Just strange eBay is slowly removing options without any acknowledgement or that it would appear differently depending on what device you are using. I think this could cause confusion for buyers and sellers alike.

@pjcdn2005

I've never searched anything on eBay with a device other than a PC. Only can report what I am seeing.

As a side note your listings show watchers for any items that have watchers. (List view)

None of my watchers display. A volume of watchers "can" trigger purchases.

I think we have to keep in mind that what we may see on a listing may not be the same as what other users see.

Some of the European eBay sites support payment methods that aren't available to Canadian users.  I used to be able to see them, I can't now, and I suspect that change is because those sites detect that I'm located in Canada, not because those eBay sites no longer accept those payment methods.

Similarly, if you're using a PC to browse eBay and make your buying from the site, Apple Pay will not be an option for you.

@lotzofuniquegoodies

I do remember an ebay rep saying that Apple Pay could not be seen on pc's so I would be surprised if you

see it on chrome.

Here is a thread from Jan 2022 confirming that the Discovery card doesn't show up on as an option on.ca.  It may have shown before MP started. Perhaps you are thinking of the 'old day's 😉

...you are looking at the eBay world though a laptop (outdated tech)

...things that work only in the US or on Smart tech will not appear on the website, why should it.

...it's like comparing Apples & Oranges, or a horse and a steam engine.

On my laptop, on my own listings I see

Payments:
Paypal
G Pay
Visa
Mastercard
American Express

and on my smartphone I see the exact same payment methods

Why would I see Discovery or Apple, I use neither...

That is not the case for me, I have an Apple Desktop and iPhone and neither shows me Apple Pay. I've never used it before so not sure if it was always this way but I checked both now and not there. On both my phone and computer I see the same: PayPal, Google Pay, Visa, Mastercard  Amex.

Guess you missed my earlier post.  If you're seeing Google Pay as a payment method when using an Apple device, it's likely because you're using Chrome as your browser.

Hi marno, I did see your post but I never use Chrome, I use Safari (Mac based browser).

Hmm. That’s odd, @msau4301. I see the Apple Pay option when I use Safari. Are you set up with Apple Pay? Do you use any Google products, such as Maps? Are your OS and iOS current?

Hi marnotom, No I'm not set up with Apple Pay (but I'm not for Google Pay either and it shows). Maybe for Apple Pay you need the app for it to show under payment options?? I have never used (or really noticed) if it was ever there, I was only looking since lotz had put the question out there so I was letting him know what I saw on my end.  Sounds like there isn't consitency so who knows what each other is seeing.

Yes I do use Google Maps and their search engine of course but am always routed to them through Safari. I believe my OS is current. I had procrastinated on doing so quite a while but recently (month or so ago) bit the bullet and did all updates (I have 10's of thousands of photos in my iPhoto library so updates are very, very long and it leaves me without use of my computer for a while but I did it anyways!

Also, not sure if it has anything to do with it but lately unless I specifically go to Google to search (anything) I'm defaulted to Ecosia (didn't know what it was but my kids said it's some eco conscience search engine). Not sure if that has anything to do with, it is the only "difference" I've noticed lately. But everything else seems to be functioning fine.

I would guess that you have to first set up a Google Pay account with Google and then then when you are given the options to pay for an item on ebay, you click on google pay.

It is never a good idea to use a gift card for online buying.

It is not possible to get a refund on a gift card.

The money you transfer from a gift card is a "gift" to the receiver.

Don't use gift cards for online buying.
