Another amusing message from eBay

Well, this message from eBay - copied verbatim - at least gave me my chuckle for the day (I've put the amusing part in bold):

"To help you be a successful seller and ensure a safe experience on eBay, we sometimes change limits, and or add restrictions/suspensions, on accounts. Account limits allow us to learn about your selling activity and to make sure you're adhering to our selling practices policy and performance standards. Limits vary by seller and can change over time.

You can now sell up to items monthly and up to monthly. If you currently have more items (active items for sale and sold items) this month than your limits allow, you should reduce the number of listings you have on the site. Any listings that place you over your current limits may be automatically removed."

So, I had no idea what my limits were before, no idea where to find out, never cared, never encountered the subject previously, and now I also don't know what my new limits are.

Hilariously unhelpful missive, thank you eBay for this illuminating information. Smiley Very Happy

I "think" they have not finished rolling out all info. Mine is on my dot com summary page at the bottom.

I checked my seller pages on .com, and my limit isn't posted there either.  You may be right about the partial roll-out. The imposition of limits must, as others have said, be a new thing for those of us sellers who have been around for a few years, and eBay may not have got around to posting everybody's limits on their seller pages.

Still, what struck me as so absurdly funny is that eBay sent me a notice that my limits have (presumably) been raised without telling me in the notice what they've been raised to (see my original post).  What was the point of a notice if they aren't going to give me any information in it?

Wholly, utterly, completely, thoroughly, stupid.

Ditto.

I expect it is a new measure applicable to relatively new sellers only.

But why would I have received the "notice of nothing" on the subject of limits since I've been around a few years here?

Are you saying that notices probably went to relatively new sellers with actual limit amounts in them, and that those of us who have been here for several years get the silly "blank" notices?  That actually might make the kind of goofy sense I'd expect from eBay!

As you can probably see, I've been active on eBay since 2001, and selling since 2007, and this is the first mention I've ever had from eBay concerning limits on my selling.  Not that I'm likely to ever exceed any reasonable limit, but I wouldn't mind knowing what my limit is, or indeed if I have one.

Is there a copy in your eBay messages list?

Phishing????

Just to confirm whether it is real eBay or not....

Hi 'cumos' -- I don't have any reason to believe it was a fake message.  I got a copy in my eBay message centre as well as in my own email (linked to my eBay account).  Besides, this message was the kind of illogical notification I'm used to expecting from eBay. Smiley Wink

I think Pierre may be right -- eBay probably created a computer programme set up to notify newer sellers of their current limits via eBay messages.  Instead, the programme sent a notice to everybody (or at least older sellers like me), and the blank spaces that were meant to be filled in with the actual amounts simply got left blank -- the "notice of nothing" I referred to.  This looks similar to the kinds of automated forms that either get a value filled in -- if there is one -- or nothing at all, if there aren't any applicable values.  It creates a silly, illogical result ('notices of nothing'), but that's the only explanation that really makes sense.

Nonetheless, if this notice (or limits) wasn't applicable to me or other "grandfathered" sellers, couldn't eBay have turned off the notification, or sent a message advising that limits do not apply due to the length of time on eBay -- or are eBay programmers not that good?

I've had a limit since April 2012.  Its very generous but my sales crashed to about 30% since then.
