Canada Post 2018 parcel changes

 https://www.canadapost.ca/cpo/mc/assets/pdf/business/parcelRate_2018_OoC_en.pdf

Highlights:

1. Light Packet dies. Small Packet and Tracked Packet get an additional 0-100g price range to help compensate.

2. Expedited Parcel (Canada) gets a volumetric change. Starting January 15 the divisor will be 5000 instead of 6000.  This will push some parcel sizes into a higher price range. Regular parcel will remain unchanged with a 6000 divisor. So for some sizes Regular Parcel may be a better price than a discounted Expedited Parcel price.

3. Domestic prices will be up about 4% and the rest of the world up around 1.2%

4. Manual Small Packet labels will be phased out -- bar codes will be required (even if they are not tracked).

Actual 2018 parcel rates still to be released.

I do it all the time with this form and have never had a problem.

Personally, a bar code is useless if you can't track.

I have no idea why CP cares about a bar code.

Maybe we should ask why unless it is to stop people from using discounted postage!

I seem to remember having to do an international shipment a few weeks ago where I went online to Canada Post and filled in all the customs info on an online form where it generated a bar code and then took my iPad to the post office and they just scanned it in. You could also print the bar code and take it in with you. Probably how we will have to do it from now on.

I've seen the older version...the green ones (if we are talking about the same thing) . But I had never used them as an actual label, only as a place to fill in customs information.  When you use them, you don't put the name and address in a separate area on the front of the package?

On the white form above, I fill it out in full including the HS Code, and use a Dymo address label on the front as well as a return label on the front.

Worked for years so no idea why CP has to change things It has all the info needed other than the useless bar code they want.

You do use the CN22 as a label...without any other name and address on the package? Just curious if that can be done.

No, I only use it as a customs form on the back of the mailers.

Address and return address go on the front as well as an air mail sticker.

Has worked for years. I only use them on bubble mailers and flats.

I don't use on-line shipping (never have). I manually fill out my Customs Forms at home and go down to the Post Office to mail my packages.

This system has work flawlessly for me over the years... I'm not saying that it's better then on-line shipping, but it's my personal preference.

So the old CN22 form will be missed unless it's replaced with an updated version.

Yes, I totally agree. I can see a updated Tracked-Packet Customs form with a bar code but not for regular Small Packets.

Have done the same as dutchman forever.  Every couple years go to the main post office and get them to give me a huge pile of the small packet forms.  Fill them out myself, cover the package in old stamps and drop them in a mail box.  Including 1kg boxes that end uo covered on all sides.   Do not like this change at all, costs will definitely be higher then using old stamps,   No way am I taking them to a post office everyday to be able to use stamps

It will be interesting to see how long they'll allow the stockpiled old forms....theoretically you should be good for a couple years!

How about using stamps to pay (at the PO counter ) for the label?

I had fun last week sticking $75+ worth of stamps on a Tracked Packet going to Australia.

Especially since the stamps decided that they would not stick to the paper.

I now own a glue stick and 'real' kraft paper.

Basically, I told the clerk that I would be paying with stamps, used them to pay the majority of the postage and paid cash for the remainder.

I rarely use tracked rates so it was more fun than a bother for me.

Not sure about the people in line behind me though.

I have to drive to the post office, so does not work for me.

I just revised my listings so I would not have to use them except the very odd occasion.

Canada ships to Canada and US ships to US, no international at all and 99.9% will go letter mail or oversize letter mail.

May hurt my sales somewhat but I am at the point I really don't care.

Every time we turn around we get the shaft from Ebay, Paypal, or CP.

And I believe January is when the contract for CP and it's wonderful union come up again.

Nope.

It makes the customer feel all warm and fuzzy.

Frankly the actual number and even percentage of fraud is much lower than some posters seem to think.

Yes, it varies with category, but most people really are honest.

And the scammers are as likely to be sellers as buyers.

The bar code tells the buyer that postage has been purchased and the shipment is on its way.

I have no idea why CP cares about a bar code.

For CP it is a bookkeeping number and useful for that reason.

At one time, Small Packet also carried $100 in insurance, which CPO was very good about paying out on.

That disappeared as online commerce began flooding the PO, along with an increase in the dollar value of Small Packet insurance claims (if not the percentage).

How else is someone going to go to the Post Office and declare value, list contents and shipping info on a Small Packet??

The Small Packet form we print online looks quite different and is much clearer about what each line means.

I suspect the old form you show was designed when few actually used it who were not packing for businesses and the PO clerk could walk customers through the Christmas parcel to Nonna in Italy or Aunt Jessie in Florida.

Also the online label can be adjusted to fit the parcel, which can be quite an advantage.

A large percentage of people don't print shipping labels on-line. There needs to be physical example for people to use.....

For those who do not wish to print Small Packet labels online CP does provide a hybrid option. There is a page on the CP site known as CUSTOMS FORMS ONLINE. Anyone can use this tool (no CP account or logon required) to replicate the physical paper form. The user simply completes the form online including sender and recipient addresses and phone numbers along with all of the required customs details including HS code. Upon completion the user can either print out a bar code or email the barcode to a cell phone. Then take the printed barcode or your cell to the PO and have the clerk scan it and choose whatever service you want to purchase... the clerk prints your label right at the counter and affixes it to your parcel. All that's left to do is sign the customs declaration if applicable.
One purpose of the barcode is that the customs people can just scan it to retrieve all of the more detailed info that the shipper entered on the online form. I know whenever I've filled out one of those physical paper forms the space is so cramped I can barely read it!

You still have to go to the post office which is a total waste of time.

The on line forms take way too much time to fill out.

As stated in a number of posts above, many of us have used the paper forms for years and have never had any issues at all.
