What happens now that orders are in the mail with a possible expected delivery date of September 30 and early October, what happens if not received there is no way of knowing whether these items will be received after strike is over.  Will eBay delay delivery date?

Just checked  tracking on several parcels mailed September 17.

One parcel going to a remote area of Newfoundland ... Goose Bay... is expected to be delivered on October 1.   A very new buyer on eBay with only one feedback.

This is why the store was placed on vacation!   I have had many purchases going to remote areas of Canada.  Delivery takes that little bit extra time.

Now I have to look forward to a delay in the start of a strike.... atleast until after October 1.....

Now there is someone who wants to buys books and do a local pickup.

The listings are on vacation and not being shown on eBay... no sales possible....

The frustration is starting to add up....

What’s frustrating about this? Either you do Local Pickups or you don’t. I don’t understand.

Local pickups are no problem.  The item must be bought  off eBay.  However, This cannot be done if the store is on vacation.

Then I cannot arrange for a local pickup if my only method of communication with someone is eBay Massages, and the book has not been bought off eBay...

A potential buyer once tried to send a telephone number via eBay Messages.  This person was blocked from doing so...

The rule is buy it first on eBay and then arrange for a local pickup.  Only then can a telephone number be forwarded to the buyer. This has been done on a regular basis.

For a local pickup  a buyer calls me to confirm they are coming to make the pickup  and that also confirms that I am home.

CUPW has not put anything new on their  website for two days.

Something important could or could not be happening.

We shall see......

wouldn't the obvious solution be to arrange specific time that you would take the store out of Vacation mode long enough for said buyer to make the purchase and then return store to Vacation mode??

My experience is that the "wake up" process when items have been hidden takes about a day.... before all the items are showing, unless the buyer has them all being watched/bookmarked.....

Solution: send the buyer the link to the listing

So that will be one less option for sellers if they were to require very shortly.

How many Canadian sellers that use Canada Post... Do Not ... know about the potential for a strike?

Then they wake up one day and find that Canada Post is on strike....

What next?

Just took a look at....... Books > Nonfiction > History > Canada....... and I must be the only seller prepared for a strike.

I won't be listing until after the contract is settled and the possibility of a strike is over. While Ebay may extend delivery times, I am not certain that they would remove any negative feedback from buyers.

From the CUPW website .....

Conditions of Employment -----

It is important to be aware that as of 12:01 am September 26, the Canada Labour Code gives an employer the right to change our conditions of employment. At this point we do not know what Canada Post will do.

The union gets to give 72 hours notice for job actions (no overtime / rotating strikes / full strike) and Canada Post gets to give 72 hours notice of a lockout.

The strike mandate given to the Union by members is valid for sixty days.

If no lockout occurs, a strike notice can be issued anytime before November 8, 2018.

Maybe other book sellers are prepared too; they are just not as paranoid about it? After all, this can be a subjective matter. I'm not ending any of my listings until I know for sure that they are going on strike. If they are announcing decision to strike on the 26th, since 72 hours notice is required, that means the soonest they can strike is Sept 29. That's still over a week from today so I don't see a point panicking over it. And for all we know this could drag on for weeks before they come to a decision. But to each their own; just because other people aren't closing shop, it doesn't mean they aren't prepared. A lot of people have plan B (mine would be to use CCE if I have to).

I think that you are more cautious than most of us are so I wouldn't expect to see other stores closed a week before a strike vote.

I didn't close down the last time there was a threat of a strike and since there was no strike, I'm glad that I didn't.. The time before that when they did rotating strikes, I did close down for a day or two but ended up opening my store again had no problems.  It can be a little stressful but ebay isn't ever 100% stress free anyway!

I need a holiday..... a week or more will be of benefit to me.... Things have been piling up.......   I remember 2016 where my store was on vacation for July and August.  and it was in 2016 that nothing big was resolved.

Four  things have to be considered....

(1) Christmas is a few months away..... a big time for parcels, on top of an already large amount of parcels in the mail system

(2) The union is very quiet.....  Something that may be indicative of a big change by Canada Post...  and the government may let it happen.

(3) 2018 is very much different than 2016.    The pension situation has been adjusted by the government..   How important is everything else?

(4) The critical factor may eventually be something like ....  You can have this ... if ...  we can have that.

From the CUPW website.....

The arbitration document has been released.....

This document  provides equal pay for Rural workers.... equal everything... effective January 1, 2016

CUPW is happy.....  But... What will Canada Post say?

Negotiations will continue.....

I find it a bit strange that more posters to this thread are referring to strikes rather than lockouts, when recent history shows that strikes have just slowed down the mail slightly. Lockouts, on the other hand, are what have shut down things altogether (with a few exceptions).

Re arbitration

Assuming the unions have won total victory on the pay equity front (well deserved) here is how I would be tempted to respond.

"Great, we at CP agree wholeheartedly that all employees deserve to be paid equally no matter where they happen to live or work.

Therefore, we are happy to propose an equitable compromise that the corporation can afford as follows;
We offer an immediate rural hourly rate increase of x% in conjunction with an immediate urban decrease of x% with the effect that both rates become equal. To this new base rate we propose an immediate advance of 1.5% plus an additional increase of 1.5% annually over the term of the contract."

In the past, there are precedents where this sort of solution was implemented here in Ontario. If the wage gaps are not astronomical this approach makes a lot of sense. Doubt the postal unions would see it that way though.

You left out the decrease in pay for the non-union members particularly those in the executive suite.

Fun fact. -- DH was on the committee that selects the stamp topics for a few years. Those executive offices are very plush. They even have thier own (licensed) dining room separate from the cafeterias that serve the proletariat.
