Canada Post Strike Update September 12

From the CUPW website.

The members of the union have voted....

CUPW will be in a legal strike position as of September 26 if the parties cannot reach an agreement.

Negotiation continues... but ...

Sounds like it’s time to make a booty call to FedEx again.

Re: Canada Post Strike Update September 12

Last time, I shut my store just in case, I think that they did a few days rotating, but I can't remember.  Shutting my store, was the wrong thing to do.  This time I will keep it open.  All of my US and international mail are sent through Chit Chat.  Lets hope they settle quickly.

Re: Canada Post Strike Update September 12

From the CUPW website.....

Arbitration will take place on September 12, 2018 before Arbitrator Flynn, who will render her decision as soon as possible.

This is ... Pay Equity Arbitration.....  The Rural versus Urban pay question.

There was some indication that the arbitrator may be focused on CUPW's side of this claim.....Canada Post says ... No.

We shall see.......  Maybe the government might legislate what must happen.

CUPW's  statements on the CUPW website appear to have a "quiet tone"  in 2018 compared to 2016

--------------------------------

The fact that we will soon be in the Christmas season  may be considered a problem for allowing the strike to proceed.

What will the government say... and then do?

---------------------------------

If Canada Post is defined as an essential service.... There will never be another strike.....

---------------------------------

The Pension situation from 2016 was adjusted by the government through regulation.  If Pension is a problem, it is not a big problem in 2018

@musicyouneed

I think that they did a few days rotating, but I can't remember.

The last real shutdown of service was when management went on strike and locked out the workers was in 2011.

canada post.jpgI may be a little biased.

CUPW doesn't want to go out because then they don't get paid, and they have mortgages just like real people.

When management shuts everything down, they keep getting paid. They may even get bonuses.

If I recall, wasn't the urban/rural pay equity issue the one that was put "on hold" last time and never resolved, in order to just get the postal system running again?

If so, this could be another messy, drawn-out, on again, off again standoff situation like last time -- unless of course the government passes legislation.

For me personally, this situation could not have happened at a worse time.  I have dozens of new items ready to list and several custom orders that I will have completed and ready to be delivered by early October.  I think I'll be shutting my eBay store down this Friday unless there is a clear indication this dispute will be settled (somehow).

Ugghh.  ~:-(

I won't end listings until it's set in stone. I don't have enough sales to be greatly affected by it anyway... And if I really have to, CCE is an option, just an inconvenient one, that's all.

Have to agree...and for me also not worth worrying about for the handful of sales I get on eBay...

although I don't have an alternative to CP, I do have options like extending handling times...apply economy shipping methods, or simply not list anything...

I don't have a store on eBay and I don't depend on sales for income...

Re: Canada Post Strike Update September 12

Something else to think about.....  Privatization of Canada Post.

Royal Mail, the British Postal Service,  has been privatized, as has postal services in Switzerland. Italy. Brazil, New Zealand, France and Germany while Japan is about ready to do the same.

Many of Canada's  Crown Corporations have been privatized over the years,  and have become a most successful business.

Canada Post  and the Government of Canada have a lot to think about.... What next?

Privatization would allow Canada Post to do what is necessary to be a most viable business...

and then ..... CUPW  ....???  would most likely disappear.

Re: Canada Post Strike Update September 12

People have been calling a local postal outlet  and they have been asking if Canada Post will be on strike....   The word is out..... and Christmas is coming

Less lettermail... More parcel delivery...  The internet world continues to grow.....A reality today...  Yet Canada Post  must follow Crown Corporation guidelines for Canada Post.

Is a ... NEW... Canada Post... coming

Re: Canada Post Strike Update September 12

I shut my store last time this happened & of course it was the wrong thing to do.  It seemed to take weeks to get back to “normal”sales. Bad time of the year for us; good for them.  FedEx & other shippers are not an option for me as too expensive for my smaller low cost items. No comment yet from eBay on this. Maybe the government will decide this is an essential service. Sales have been decent for me the past few weeks so I think I will keep it open for the time being. Hopefully eBay will back sellers if it happens (re late shipments etc).

Re: Canada Post Strike Update September 12

yes last time a whole bunch of us put our stores into holiday mode, as the strike seemed imminent. So this time, none of us will probably close our stores, and guess what,  the strike will most likely happen.. it is Murphy's law..

Re: Canada Post Strike Update September 12

Murphy’s Law. Yes.

Last time, I developed a contingency plan and stuck to it, one that did not involve closing down my store. This year, I’ll do the same: extend handling time to accommodate a freight-forwarder or twice weekly trips to the USA for international shipments, increase postage costs to address paying couriers for domestic shipments, and focus hard on Local Pickup.

Re: Canada Post Strike Update September 12

I already have plans to shut down both my store and my non-store for about 2 weeks while I am on vacation starting end of Sept. so hoping any strike won’t last too long. Timed it right for once.

Re: Canada Post Strike Update September 12

fortunate if you have a freight forwarder, but how do you accomplish mailing 10$ items across Canada?  just wondering, yes Usa is doable ., But I sell 85% within Canada.  And I am 2 hours from the border.
