I have tried to find the cost of the Canadapost Flat Rate Box rates on the CP website, can't find them. Does someone know the prices please?
I have one little skein of yarn to go to NL, and they want almost $28 to mail it in a padded mailer regular mail, I have to find a better rate.
Solved! Go to Solution.

At the bottom of the web page above is the following:
$3 OFF SMALL FLAT RATE BOX OFFER CURRENTLY AVAILABLE IN THE GREAT GIFT IDEAS CATALOGUE AND DETAILS MAGAZINE IS VALID ONLY UNTIL DECEMBER 31, 2019.
How does one get that $3 off?
Edit. It doesn't matter since it expired. Sorry.

Thank you SO much, I am going to revise the shipping cost on some of the smaller lots of yarn I have listed to Canada. I am wondering it the 5 kg includes the weight of the box.

have never used the flat rate boxes, but yes I would expect that the 5Kg is total weight of box and contents.

Five kilos is more than 10 pounds, so if you are shipping that much wool, it should be a profitable sale.
We don't get our Solutions for Small Business discount on the boxes, I have learned. On the other hand, we don't have to buy a separate box either.
If you have a Store, our shipping supplies allowance includes a few sizes of boxes as well as the branded poly envelopes. And those are eligible for the SSB discounts.

How much does a skein of wool weigh? And how flat can you press it between two taped sheets of card?
Because from BC to NL if it weighs 300 grams I got a tracked price of $17.89 Regular Parcel and that was with no SSB discounts.

It seems it's not the weight, it's the size that adds the cost. My hubby had a great idea, using my vacuum sealer. It looks strange and is rock hard, but can go as letter mail! I checked with the buyer first and she was happy with that.

Why do you see a difference? $17.89 with tax is around your $18
Vancouver to Toronto, first size range (under 750g)
$17.77 with HST included if buying the label online.
About $17 with GST* when buying regular parcel at the counter with your card. (*) unverified
Or if you use stamps at the counter with your card, discounts as good as your buying skills.
20% discount off face (and no tax) stamps -- about $13.00
30% discount off face (and no tax) stamps -- about $11.40
Your box does have to be big enough to handle all the stamps...
(I use the top and the 2 biggest sides when sending out a box with stamps)
If you can compress your item small enough to send as oversize letter that will be the cheapest option.

One inch is bigger than the maximum 2cm. (2.54cm to be exact). So we'd have to move up to Parcel rates.
I stopped selling Flat Fifty cigarette tins because secure packaging in a bubble envelope pushed the packet up from ~1.5 cm to~ 2.5 cm and shipping cost more than the tins.

"How do you get 20 - 30% off stamps?"
you can purchase postage stamps at discount rates from eBay sellers.

Because the $17.89 that was mentioned was BC to NL ....NOT BC to Toronto!
BC to NL is always over $20. A small flat rate box is ALWAYS cheaper (unless you can squeeze it into lettermail).
It isn't always cheaper. If a boxes dimensional weight is below .750 grams, the rate can be less than a flat rate box. For example:
26x21x10cm
300 grams
From V5H2W7 to A1C1E9 (Vancouver to St. John's NF)
Small business level one expedited rate - $18.09
But if the package was going to a non major center such as Gander NL, the rate would be $22.45.
From central Alberta, I would pay the same as you to Newfoundland.

You buy from sellers on ebay or estate sales or stamp dealers with surplus stock.
Search Stamps, then select subcategory Canada
Some search words might be "mint" or "new" or "face" (to get total value of the listing), "FV" (short for face value).
Avoid "no gum" and "on paper" -- they are used stamps.
Avoid sellers who claim the face value of a "P" is worth more than 92 cents (2020 rate).
Check to see if the seller charges sales tax when determining value.
For more value do stamp hunting when ebay has a eBucks bonus or a special discount on purchases.
Some current examples:
https://www.ebay.ca/itm/202921006652
100x"P", $92 for $72.60, free shipping = 20% discount off face (plus you save $4.60 GST)
https://www.ebay.ca/itm/193383941667
75x"P", $69 for $54.99+shipping = 18.8% discount (plus you save $3.45 GST)
https://www.ebay.ca/itm/232814369988
mixed lot, $100 for $75+shipping+tax = 22% discount (plus GST savings of $1.10)
https://www.ebay.ca/itm/292602970162
100x"P", $92 for $73.59+shipping+tax = 17.8% discount (plus GST savings of 82 cents)
