Discussion question Oct 2022

Hello devon@ebay

Could we get a follow up please to this question that was asked back in Oct 2022 in the Q & A? The orginal ebay response below. I've had this happen on several occasions where a reversal was taken from my bank balance vs the pending funds. The reason I am asking again is, because there is no way to hold a balance so no way to leave funds for impending store fees/listing upgrades/promotion fees/etc. All options bring us back to the first Tuesday of the month for the release of funds, there was no real way(within ebay) to cover situations such listed above/and or cancellations after a buyer has paid because sellers in Canada are unable to hold a balance to cover unexpected eBay charges. Apologies for any post duplication.

Thanks,

-Lotzofuniquegoodies.

Could you please confirm where funds are supposed to be removed when a customer cancels an order AFTER payment. I have been told by agents that it should be from the pending transaction. This does not seem to be true. On several occasions funds were pulled from my bank account even though funds were never sent. A cancel should be straight reversal. Seeing as eBay is the processor of these funds, cancellations should be handled from those funds.

It is similar to Promoted Fees which should be pulled from the pending charge. Not from a bank balance Because you can only "attempt" to hold funds(CANADA- playing with payout settings) it makes it difficult to always be able to cover store fees. In Canada on many accounts there can be additional fees for over the limit monthly transactions. Has there been any update as to when processed funds can be used for other purchases like what is available in the USA?

Thanks,

-Lotzofuniquegoodies

PS. This is also a major concern for sellers that use eBay labels and the delay(s) in processing shipments. Funds not being in the right place at the right time.

Hey @lotzofuniquegoodies. We're going to reach out to our Payment Specialist's on this to get confirmation, and then we'll touch base on their response.

I just had my first bank withdrawl  (for January's store fees) since starting MP 1 1/2 years ago. They did use the pending funds for some of it though, just withdrew the difference .

In my case my cleared funds were sent to me Tuesday AM. My store fees were pulled out 6 hours later from my bank account. Because it was the first Tuesday of the month, there was NO way to hold funds those pending store fees. Something as a seller we should have control over.

My wish (very wishfull thinking): we could say how much (as a percentage or maximun $ amount) eBay can tranfer out of cleared funds, keeping the rest for fees and purchases.

Yes I agree, sellers should be able to designate and/or have the option to choose an amount of their pending funds to be deposited. When I first signed up for MP, I set for weekly payments, then to bi-weekly because sales did not warrant a more frequent pay out schedule. The payout schedule is now set for monthly. I don't rely on any sales monies as income so I can do this but even though my sales are few and far between on eBay these days, that monthly deposit schedule has on occasion resulted in a conflict between the amount being deposited and an amount that eBay has removed from the account because there was no longer any funds to cover the fees that accumulated after the deposit date and prior to any incoming sales funds that would cover those expenses. This same scenario also appears on another of my selling sites which is set up very similar to eBay whereby all pending funds are deposited to the seller's bank account with no ability to hold back any funds to cover any subsequent fees and then the seller has to allow the site to take funds from the bank account or seller must pay those fees with a credit card or other payment method. It is problematic and needs to be addressed.

Re: Heads up to anyone anticipating spendable funds like in the USA. This is what you see if you have spendable funds.

I am not referencing "spendable funds", I am not interested in anything that does not give seller a choice to opt in or out..Am not interested in ANYTHING that eBay makes mandatory...we already have enough of that; we already have enough micro-managing by eBay.

I am referring to the ability to have the option to have 'X" $ deposited to a bank account as payout and/or "X" amount with held from deposit so that there is a "spendable" amount available just as there was with PayPal...a seller could transfer any amount from PayPal funds to a bank account and could hold a balance of any amount in PayPal for use at seller's discretion. There was no opt in or mandatory this or that...the seller had choice.

The spendable part was referenced in the original discussion question but neither were really addressed back in October. Total agreement. Those are a sellers personal funds. They should have total control or the payments are only being managed as far as eBay is concerned. A simple improvement for anyone with a store would be have funds released on the 5th of the month as an option vs the first Tuesday. Skips any timing issue due to store fees currently being pulled on the 3rd later in the day.

For anyone interested in how funds are processed when a buyer pays and then requests cancelling several minutes later here is the(an) explanation from eBay for Business.

"It definitely is a pain point with the process, the difficulties come from the fact that though the funds show as paid and processing, they aren't in fact in your possession and are in a transient state that can't be reversed. This of it like the buyer mailing you the cash except you know for a fact that it will be delivered and never lost in the mail. You can't grab that envelope of cash mid transit and send it back to them." The concern has been forwarded to the product development team.
