How do I get cheaper shipping with canada post tracking?

I saw the new eBay policy. That is absolutely crazy, it says that people found $3 tracking expensive and now they can get tracking for cards for 55 cents! Here in Canada, a letter tracked, even if I ship it to my neighbor costs me 13$ just for tracking. That's not including the stamps or anything. To me that's Ludacris, 13$ shipping whilst Americans can enjoy their 55 cents fast shipping. It just makes it almost impossible to compete.

Policy?  You mean the eBay.com Standard Envelope option?

This seems to be a contract between eBay and the USPS.

EBay has no such contract with Canada Post.

Note that as a Crown Corporation Canada Post is mandated to work at a profit, which they have done most fiscal years since 1981. Two years that they did not were due to a  lockout of workers and when they finally gave backpay to women workers in the long running pay equity suit.

Crown Corporations are owned by the Canadian government and those profits go to the Treasury.

But I agree, Canada Post already barcodes all Parcel services, although many of those are only reciept numbers.

Extending the barcoding to become a Confirmation of Delivery number would be less expensive than some of the less imaginative executives might imagine.

EasyShip, of eBay International Standard Delivery fame, seems to be involved as well.  A USPS spokesperson interviewed by Auctionbytes gives a very "coded" explanation of the eBay Standard Envelope, stating that it's an eBay service, not a USPS service.

It seems to be pretty restrictive insofar as what types of trading cards are acceptable, too.  They can't have a value over US$20, and weight is limited to three ounces (85 g) and thickness is limited to a quarter-inch (6.3 mm).

It's safest to consider Registered Mail as a DOMESTIC ONLY service.

Registered Mail is no longer tracked outside of Canada as a rule.

There may be intermittent tracking, since it is in the mailstream and there are machines reading barcodes, but don't count on it.

To underscore that point, Canada Post goes so far as to describe Registered Mail USA and International as "a service offered for customers who require proof of mailing" while Registered Mail Domestic is "a service offered for customers who require proof of mailing/proof of delivery".

"Registered Mail Canada (domestic)

You can send letters, documents and small items like coins and jewellery by Registered Mail.

Here’s the proof you’ll receive when it’s delivered:
Signature of the person who signed when it was deliveredDate it was signed Mailing receipt"

Coins and jewelry are products, so I'm sure they're not picky about what "small items" you're insuring, provided they're not hazardous.

I've sent video games registered without any issues. I don't think they really care as long as it meets the standard lettermail size requirements.

It costs an average of about 15 dollars to ship small items (think a sports card) tracked in Canada. There is no cheap option, which is usually a shock to most people when they first explore the idea of selling online in Canada.

There are two ways you can choose to handle this as a seller. Your first option is to send your packages untracked, and eat the cost of item not received claims. Your second option is to send your packages with tracking, and eat the cost of lowering your margin by having to pay an addition 10-15 dollars an order for parcel shipping with tracking. Regardless of whether you offer "free" shipping with the 10-15 dollars baked into the Buy It Now price, or whether you sell the item for BIN Price+15 dollars, you bare the burden of the shipping cost, not the buyer. This is because if something is worth $50, someone will pay you $50 for it, or they will pay you $35 BIN+$15 shipping. They won't pay you $50 BIN+$15 shipping, becuase they aren't paying $65 for something worth $50.

So if for example you sell 10 cards worth $50 with free shipping, and ship them for $2 instead of $15, you make an additional 13 each time a sale goes off without an item not received claim. At that point, you have to figure out how often you are facing claims. If you have 1 claims every 10 orders (which would be very high for most categories), you lose $50 of value every 10 orders, but in those same 10 orders you increase your margins by a total of 13 per order, which nets you $117 more in profit. $117 is greater than $50, so tracking doesn't make sense in tha scenario. That's obviously a huge oversimplifcation, but it gives you an idea of why so many people operate without tracking.

In terms of the USA, there are cheap options to send tracked packages from Canada to the USA. You can ship small items to the USA tracked via USPS First Class or Priority mail using alternate services like Chit Chats. With Chit Chats, it will cost about 6 dollars. The issue with these services is that they are usually a bit of a hassle to use for anybody who isn't doing high volumes. With Canada Post, you can quickly print the label online and drop the package in a mailbox (if it fits) or at your local post office. Most people have somewhere to drop a package off within minutes of their house. With services like Chit Chats they only have drop spots in certain cities, and the drop spot might not be convenient. If you're driving 20 minutes both ways to drop off one package, you're wasting a lot of time.

I've shipped thousands of packages without tracking all over the world. Very rare to get an INR claim and my feeling is that 90% (at least) of the ones I do get are truthfully never delivered.

Oh I see the problem now.......Pokemon cards......those buyers can't be trusted!

As other have posted Registered Mail is the absolute worst service to use for outside Canada (very slow and rare to get delivery confirmation). Within Canada is still a very slow service and often your buyers will have to visit the Post Office to retrieve. If somebody did that to me on a sub $50 card I would be very upset, but I can read so seeing $13 shipping within Canada would have me hitting the back button in a flash.

INR claims are going to change category by category.

I sell mostly DVDs/Blu-Rays, and I would say successful delivery in Canada is probably upwards of 99.5 percent. Probably a bit higher, but I'd have to look into it.

I think people who have success evading INR claims usually do two things. They use 'economy shipping' in the shipping policies to extend the delivery window to a more realistic time frame for lettermail. They also message buyers when items ship to let them know the item did in fact ship, and that it might take a few weeks if it is delayed.
