How is a return closed if no action

A buyer started a return, but he has not mailed it yet. He has till March 21 to mail it according to the return data. If he does not mail it on or before the 21 st. does eBay close the return automatically or do I have to do something?

I'm told it will eventually close on its own but after 30 days of waiting for that to happen, I always call ebay and ask Customer Service to escalate the case in favour of the seller. Which they do because they can clearly see no return tracking was initiated. Plus, this thaws whatever freeze might be on your paypal account balance as a result.

My advice would be to give the buyer a few extra days in case he mailed it back but forgot to add tracking right away. And then call ebay Customer Service. The 'escalation' term sounds intimidating but it does the seller account no harm. Plus, that way, the case drops off instead of lingering there, tying up your paypal funds for no discernible reason.

I believe the shortest period is 5 business days before you can call, but as you note buffer that with a few days as goodwill to the customer then call in to have ebay close it out. One of the easier things to have any CSR to do.

If you don't phone, it should close in 30 business days.  I've had that happen  a few times.

Hi Pjc, that is interesting, I had one that opened the return and nothing happened thereafter.

I'm sure I waited more than 30 days and nothing happened, so whilst I was on the phone with the CSR for something else I mentioned it and they closed it for me....

Now perhaps my medium old brain is forgetting how many days, probably at best a 50/50 chance.... fortunately I very very rarely get returns anyway so hopefully I'll not have a chance to test it again...

I've waited 30+ days twice, and the cases did not close on their own. Both times, I called and had Customer Service close them for me.

It may have been as many as four times this happened. If the cases do close on their own, it happens beyond the Day 30 mark and far past the point with which I am patient waiting without access to my frozen paypal funds. I wouldn't play wait-and-see for 35 days. I like my paypal balance to be solvent, I use it to pay for things.

Are you referring to 30 days or 30 business days? I honestly don't keep track of how many days it has been when they close but they have always closed and it was around the 30 business days mark.

I don't recall ever having my funds frozen for a return request.  If the funds are needed and they are frozen then I would call in about 10 days if the buyer still hasn't indicated the item was shipped.

Funds are automatically frozen -- or at least they used to be -- as soon as a case is opened regardless of the reason for the Return request if the seller is not top-rated on that site. Like ebay UK, for example: a Remorse Return would equal frozen funds until the case closed either by the buyer, the seller, or Customer Service. If I listed an item in CAD on ebay.ca where I am a top-rated seller and it was bought on ebay.co.uk by a Great Briton, and that buyer decided to return it for reasons of Remorse, the funds are frozen. Unless ebay has changed this process due to it aggravating more sellers than I.

And, according to the last time I had to call about this, it's 21 business or 30 calendar days, whichever comes later.

Thanks for the help and responses. Here is a little additional info.

FYI - I waited until the day after (today) he was supposed to return the radio. I phoned eBay this morning and requested the return be finalized in my favor. eBay agreed said they would do it right away and that I would have access to my with held funds with in 24 hours.

I think this buyer wanted a partial return - he wrote a long discourse in the return explanation about how he really liked the radio but also mentioned a bunch of very minor flaws like micro sanding swirls on the surface of the radio. I will never know - but !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would agree your buyer was probably finagling for a price adjustment as opposed to a return.

Have they left you any (weird) feedback? I don’t remember if a unfulfilled Return Request means the buyer can or cannot still leave feedback. Maybe someone else can recall. I think perhaps they cannot but I’m not certain.

No it stated in the case closed  eBay email to me, that any feedback they left will be removed - so I also assume they cannot leave feedback.

Incidentally the whole thing was closed within 5 minutes of my phone call including putting the money back in my account.

So kudos to eBay for that.
