I sm not sure I get why I can’t just direct all payments to my account without it passing through paypal.
Ebay makes money off of processing payments (since ebay and paypal split ebay wants to introduce their own partnered processor as soon as their contract allows) moving forwards. A marketplace will have contracts in place with a given payment processor that dictate what competing payment options will be available. Essentially nobody wants to give you a platform that brings customers to you without getting a cut. Forms of payment where you can minimize that cut or come close to eliminating it are not at all attractive for consumers. Crypto currency ecommerce sites haven't lit the world on fire for example. A payment processor in the middle brings trust to the equation which brings customers to the table.

I was under the impression that some sellers operated on ebay without a paypal account. I guess I was wrong
Some sellers are enrolled in managed payments, which is eBay's in house payment processing program with their partner Ayden. Fortunately that abomination hasn't been dumped on Canada yet. Previously sellers could have merchant accounts to process credit cards, this was mostly a concession to attract larger brick and mortar chains that preferred to leverage their lower rates. Those of us that have been around since the earliest days of Ebay may (fondly or in some cases perhaps not) remember other alternate payment methods. All you need to know if there is any form of activity it is going to be monetized moving forwards. Growth here is pretty much dead in ecommerce terms so the only option is to try to figure out how to pull more dollars from the same sales.

PayPal is ideal for those who don't have credit cards. It works fine for me.

Wait aren’t these protests over now? Some people just got paid to keep going I guess
The Hong Kong protest continue.
The HK police have killed at least two of the protestors, and several protestors have died from "falls" and "suicide".
There have been a few thousand other less lethal casualties.
I'd like to meet the guy who can pay a million HongKongers to fill the streets as protests.

They can't list if they don't accept Paypal so they would lose all ebay buyers.
Some people don't seem to have a lot of empathy for those that aren't as lucky as we are.

Hello everyone,
Since this thread has gotten a bit off-topic, please bring the discussion back to payment methods. I also want to remind everyone that off-topic discussion is allowed on the Canada Town Square board, however conversation should remain respectful, free of racism, and of course should avoid any false information.
Thanks!

I have in the past purchased items with a money order. I was informed by most sellers that it's not a form of payment they like...I was told "use paypal".

Most sellers liked money orders, especially postal ones, which can be cashed immediately at the post office counter.
But, private ones had to be deposited like a personal cheque, there were some problems with counterfeits, and there was a huge problem with fake emails from Western Union telling the seller to ship because the MO was on its way.
That was when Billpoint and eventually Paypal came in, around 2003-2005.
Eventually, because with a money order the buyer could not electronically prove payment, eBay decided not to allow MOs, personal cheques or cash payments, except for face to face /local pickup. Even there some sellers want PP and others say it's required.
Basically, PP is free to the buyer (the seller has fees) and protects her against false claims of non-payment.
That it anonymizes credit card information is a bonus.
