Registered mail option?

Hi there. I'm looking to set up tracked shipping on more expensive trading cards i'm selling and was looking about using CP registered mail since it seems to be the best option for me ( regular and expedited is 14-21$ depending of buyer location while registered is like 11-13$ flat depending of the stamp i need )

But i noticed we don't have a registered mail option on ebay?

I would like to let people know the item is tracked at least but the only thing i can do if i use registered mail is set up flat cost and choose lettermail, and it shows as ''economy shipping''. I'm scared it scare buyers on expensive items...

Only thing we can do if we use registered is using description? Why there's no option for it?

Registered mail option?

For anyone viewing this thread in the future I just wanted to cap off this conversation with the official word from eBay when asked about using Registered Lettermail for shipping:

From the August 11th, 2021 Weekly Chat Session:

A shipment needs to have an electronic tracking number (meaning I could look it up on a carrier's website and it would show transit events as well as an attempt of or actual delivery). An electronic tracking number should also be able to display the date of attempted or actual delivery, the city and postcode of the attempted or actual delivery, and also provide signature confirmation if it meets the required 750CAD threshold.

As long as the registered mail service meets those requirements you should be fine!

Domestic Registered Lettermail meets all these requirements, and would therefore be considered a valid option for tracked shipping within Canada (and sufficient evidence to hold up to an "Item Not Received" claim). With regard to the electronic tracking information provided by Canada Post for Registered Lettermail, it is identical to that which is provided for parcel services.

Be careful with International Registered Lettermail sent through Canada Post, as it would only be considered valid tracking if it has "end-to-end" tracking with confirmation of delivery (for many countries the tracking will end once the item leaves Canada).

Registered mail option?

As far as I know, whilst registered items are "somewhat" tracked, eBay (and PAYPAL) don't recognize them as a tracked service so you won't have the coverage same as if they were sent lettermail.

This is probably why they don't show as options.

Registered mail option?

Registered Mail is a very old service- predating the Post Office I believe.

Originally the service was called "Money Letter".

In the 21 st century however, it has been bypassed by faster, more secure systems including ExpressPost, Expedited Parcel (only available with a Solutions for Small Business account) and Priority Post.

Registered Mail still exists, the PO is great on tradition, but tracking is not going to happen outside of Canada, and the service is notoriously slower than the newer equally secure services.

Do NOT use Registered Mail to ship to the USA or overseas.

It is also only for documents and paper, not for goods, although that is not pushed too hard.

And the Registered Fee is on top of the normal postage, so if your "letter"  weighs 300 gr. that $4.40 charge would be added to the Registered charge and the fuel surcharge and sales taxes.

Huh really?

Are you 100% sure, do you have source? Cause it would be absolutly weird and have non sense. It is tracked with a number like any other service. And even the gouvernement rely on registered mail as tracked service this is what you must use when shipping important documents. The option even have 100$ insurance up to 1000$ i think, and signature. At the end it's just lettermail, tracked

If there is tracking/delivery confirmation then that is accepted by eBay.  But the only time registered is guaranteed to have delivery confirmation is in Canada.  There is not a even a registered mail option for the US.

You don't have to show that you are using lettermail on your listing....you can use one of the generic shipping options...economy, standard or express.

In Canada

https://www.canadapost-postescanada.ca/cpc/en/support/articles/registered-mail-canada/overview.page

While you can add insurance up to $5000, what the insurance covers is very restricted. Does have online tracking for Canada. No idea if it is accepted by ebay for tracking purposes (but it is a valid method used over on amazon.ca).

Not really useful for outside of Canada:

Okay so i could just pick ''regular parcel'' too it does not matter when it's flat cost if i understand, just need to pick an option that fits the delivery time i guess

For US shipping i don't think about it for now, i'm not offering it. It's already hard enough to figuring out and set up viable domestic shipping to be able to sell

Is it not even a good idea to avoid using ''economy shipping'' for flat cost lettermail and put everything as ''standard shipping'' just to scare scammers, then they never know what's tracked and whats not

With a Solutions for Business account you could use the following for Canada:

Regional Xpresspost Envelops for 12.00 each (Mininum purchase 10) or 50.00 for 4.

Nationally for 18.12 each (minimum purchase 10). 80.00 for pkg of 4.

Bubble envelop regional 14.25 each. Bubble envelop national 22.20.

+ applicable taxes (4 packs pick up at any postal outlet )

You would have to play with your shipping to make it work for you.

Specifics on registered mail:

Register your mail and get a signature | Business | Canada Post (canadapost-postescanada.ca)

Prepaid envelopes are overpriced those are not viable. Everything coming from CP is overpriced actually, i bought a photo mailer from them it's just a cardboard envelope i paid 2.99$ + tx, i checked on amazon, the same thing same quality was 25x for 20$.

Bubble envelop national 22.20, imagine selling a 50$ card Qc to On and having to charge 75$ lol That's not viable, would not sell anything

Note that for USA you must also purchase ExpressPost.

It's a dead service-- it just won't stop talking.

As for cost.

Registered Mail* is available for purchase at your local post office. Prices are additional to regular postage prices.

There is no saving over the cost of Expedited or Tracked shipping.

The tracking is not done by other postal services.

EBay does not accept it even within Canada and has not for years.

Expedited is the same cost as Regular parcel when you use your SfSB number (it's not available without it) and moves faster.

Regular is only usable in Canada.

Outside Canada you use Small Packet (no tracking), Expedited USA/International, ExpressPost, Tracked USA/International or Priority Post.

This

https://www.canadapost-postescanada.ca/information/app/far/business/findARate?execution=e1s1

Doesn't give you the Expedited Rates (you need the secret handshake for those)

but mess about with a few destinations and weights to get a clearer idea of shipping costs.

Shipping is the hardest part of selling online.

The branded ones are helpful in that they move faster.

I wish eBay's  branded envelopes included those photomailers. (Part of the Store subscription deal).

Also check ULine and even Staples for photomailers.

Do you guys have a source of this? I'm reading a lot of contradictory messages over the net about if ebay accept registered mail or not as tracking option. I don't see why they would not accept it since it's tracked like any other service, even have signature. There's no logic that ebay would not accepting proof of delivery in dispute case when the receiver even signed, this is absurd. Also i don't see any rule about it on ebay, while on the other side there's no option for it in the lisitings. This is very confusing

There is for me. Exemple regular parcel shipping one card in a bubble mailer montreal to montreal cost like 14$, this is the closest location and still more expensive than registered mail. Montreal to vancouver is around 20$. Registed mail could be ship flat anywhere for 9.75$ + 0.92$ ( like it was not expensive enough, i checked a few weeks ago it was 9.50$ ). This is way cheaper overall and so more simple for listings pricing too

After doing a bit more research. i found that minimum weight for a parcel is 50g. too

https://www.canadapost-postescanada.ca/cpc/doc/en/support/preparing/preparing-parcels.pdf

Most of my packages average 30g. I guess i would need to add some rocks from the yard... Just a joke but figuring out shipping is such a pain, it's like 1001 problems. Registered mail would really be the best option for me

My bad i meant for regular parcel service, not literally a parcel. Document/packet is 50g, i guess a small bubble mailer with a card in it would go in one of those categories

Registered mail option?

Just an observation and opinion after reading through this post: I think you are making decisions based on assumptions instead of facts and making a rather straight-forward process much more complex than it is, which is causing you undue stress.

You're assuming that no one will pay the $14-$22 tracked package rates for more expensive items and thus is costing you possible sales, but this is simply not the case. There's a simple, basic fact: shipping is expensive in Canada. No buyer that is buying a high-priced item is expecting tracked shipping that's less than the standard CP rates. They are the rates that everyone has to (and does) use.

I promise you, you're not going to lose sales on higher-valued items because you ship tracked via CP. There's no need to have to inconvenience yourself with the drama of registered mail when it's a service that other sellers don't use or offer and is really not saving you a significant amount. Sure, there's some buyers that want all shipping for free or only lettermail service. But they are the exception, not the majority. And if they do want your item and have an issue with shipping cost, they will message you to work something out.

So what's my recommendation:

Simplify your shipping and stick to it. It will save you stress, time, and allow you flexibility and consistency. This is my model:

  • Free domestic lettermail shipping on all small value items with $1.50 for postage/supplies built into each item's cost. USA buyers pay $2.50 shipping to cover the extra postage.
  • Expedited Parcel for all tracked items within Canada and Tracked Packet for US/international buyers.

I have tendancies to overthink but i don't think it's assumptions to say that being able to lower pricing raise odds to sell. I understand tho that if no one can do it, i'm on the same level

I guess i'll just use regular parcel, since i can't use expedited apparently it's for small business now. I still don't see how it's possible to sell anything with a 20$ shipping cost unless it's not a too high % of the item value. I guess i just won't sell many tracked items to west coast buyers. And i guess i'll need to understand US shipping instead to have more close buyers

More i learn about selling on ebay and more my conclusion is that not everything is viable to sell on ebay, fees are trash, canada post prices are trash, killing all the process in some cases. Especially in my geographical situation being on the east coast of the country

Expedited Parcel for all tracked items within Canada and Tracked Packet for US/international buyers.

What do you if you have to ship only one to a few cards? As said the post before it's written that minimal weight for regular parcel / expedited is 50g, while a small package cards is like 20-30g

I wouldn't  worry about the minimun weight in that chart.  I've shipped many items over the years that weighed less than the minimums on that page without a problem. I didn't even iknow there was a minimum weight until you mentioned it.

CP also lists min. measurements and if you go below those minimums neither the eBay calculator or ebay shipping will work.  However, you can print a label anywhere else including at the CP site and at the post office for packages under that minimun, so I have no idea why they are used on those charts.

Regarding registered mail...international registered mail does not have online delivery confirmation which is why it isn't useful  for eBay packages.   It does have online delivery confirmation within Canada so eBay treats it the same they treat any service with tracking.

Expedited parcel -  it's available on eBay for anyone to use.   You can get a small business number for free without having an actual business.  You can apply online.
