Should/can I refund without a case being opened?

I have a buyer who bought a pattern from me. She has asked for a refund. I goofed, sent the wrong size, don’t have another to send her. I think she may be an elderly lady (well so am I) and she is having trouble understanding how to open a Not as described case and request a refund. I have explained how to do so but now her emails are starting to make no sense as if she is so upset and can’t think. All she wants is her money back. I’m just a little worried that she is so confused about eBay that she won’t understand to look into her PayPal account for the refund.

Should I just refund her through PayPal? It’s only about $15 and I have already told her I do not want the pattern returned to me. It’s not worth the cost of postage since she is in the UK. I really don’t know how she ever managed to even order the item she is so confused, but I need to do the right thing and give her the refund.

I just discovered that I can now go to my Orders - Paid & Shipped and send a refund that way instead of through PayPal. Yes, I’m in MP.

Ditto, I did the same.  If you have a MP balance pending it is very slick.

I don’t have a pending balance, very unusual - no sales since last week, but I just added a credit card to my MP so hopefully that will work instead. I guess I’ll go ahead and try to refund her that way.

If you don't have a balance the default is to withdraw from the MP linked bank account.  I have not had to do that but I would think that process should take a bit longer to close out.   No idea if there is no balance in MP or the bank if it goes to your credit card then.  I can't see Ebay wanting to do that as they would have CC charges then.  Good question for clarification.

You also could have cancelled/buyer requested.

I know that in these situations ebay wants the buyer to open a return/refund request but IMO it isn't worth stressing out the buyer if they aren't familiar with how to do things.

That's a good point. I wonder what the difference in the length of time is when refunding from pending funds, vs refunding from bank account vs refunding from a  card.

No I couldn’t cancel/buyer requested since she already had received the item. I don’t think I stressed her out, I just answered her 2 emails, the first one was just to say she didn’t have to bother to return the pattern to me.

My first time doing a refund in MP, in fact I don’t remember if I have ever had to do one. I forgot that eBay can withdraw from my bank account, maybe I didn’t have to add my credit card. Doesn’t really matter, if they use my CC I’ll just get points towards flying again. Will post here and let you know how they do it.

You tried to cancel using buyer requested and you couldn't?

I'm sure that in the past I have used that even when the buyer had already received the item but

I haven't tried to do that in quite a while.  A cancellation does have to be done within 30 days of the original purchase.
