So Many Listings with No Views

As I was relisting some items tonight, I noticed that about 50 to 60% of my items had 0 views in the last 30 days.  I find this shocking.  These are popular brands that usually receive a lot of views in any given month .... of course, only a few result in sales.  On the other hand, some of my items received 100+ views.

My sales have been poor during the last two months, so I expect that my listings would drop in search, but not become totally invisible.  But maybe I have so few sales because they hadn't shown up in search for some time.  I usually check to see how many views an item has received when I re-list and I'm sure I would have noticed 0 views on so many items.

Anyone else experiencing this?

Oh dang. That was when I filtered by Canada Only. When I don't.... there is still no option for group/ungroup but... where are you? I find you when I rearrange the results to show Newly Listed first.

Re: So Many Listings with No Views

Also, I just went into your listing, so you should see one view at least? Maybe the Views counter is broken. You're offering free shipping to Canada and the USA so I'd assume this would place you nice and high in search results.

I think I found one by doing a search! But I only found it by searching your full title so there were precisely two listings and yours was one, therefore no search results to Group or Ungroup. It doesn't apply when there are not enough listings to collect into groups. Don't ask me how ebay decides that.

Thanks for looking.   I just wanted to mention that although I searched with the words Lancome bi-facil eye makeup remover, the 293 listings that showed up contained those words + various other descriptive words, just as mine did.  So mine should have shown up at least in the list of 293, since no one is going to think to search for 1 Full size .... etc.  Even though this shows as a "new listing" with 29 days left, this follows a 30-day period with 0 views.

I searched for a few others of mine .... same thing.  They're not there.  I can't believe I'm the only one and I'd be interested in knowing if there are people who are paying for listings, over and above their free ones, and these listings are not showing up.

We've all heard that eBay randomly hides listings, for who knows what reason, but it's obviously unfair and unreasonable to hide half of one person's listings.  It is so deceitful, in my opinion, to encourage buyers to become sellers by offering 50 free listings which may or may not be visible to buyers, and to penalize existing sellers for no good reason.  I don't care if the listings are free or not.  They're still getting their FVF's.  There are no words to describe how angry I am right now.

I'm going to raise this at the Wednesday chat.

Re: So Many Listings with No Views

Are you looking on ebay.ca or ebay.com? I looked on ebay.ca. I can't speak for what ebay.com showed you but if your listing was nowhere to be seen, I'd point the first finger at the Product-Based search results.

Re: So Many Listings with No Views

Also, ebay is experimenting with Artificial Intelligence in their search results now. And I think that extends beyond Product-Based groupings but focuses on the things they really think you're more likely to buy. The results I get might be totally different than the results you get because of that.

Re: So Many Listings with No Views

Now I've searched Lancome bi-facil eye makeup remover see 400 listings on ebay.com but none are grouped/ungrouped. Yours can be found 8/10ths of the way down the page.

Who the heck knows what's going on.  I had been searching, first, on ebay.com for items listed on that site, and then on ebay.ca for the same items.  The results were identical .... nothing showed up.

But after your last post, I searched again using the same search term.  This time there was no group/ungroup choice and, like you, I saw my listing about 2/3 of the way down on the first page.  I didn't see 400 listings, however; I saw 297.

As you suggested, there may be a little AI at work here so that's why we're seeing a different number of items in search.  And eBay may be just randomly adding group/ungroup to test its practicality.  In any event, I don't plan to invest any more time than I already have in trying to figure this out.  0 views or 100 views, I'm still not selling anything and I had already determined a few months ago that there is no longer a cost/benefit in continuing to sell.  I'm just going to try to sell what I have.

Thanks mj for your attempts to help me understand what's going on.  I appreciate it.

As an aside, my eyes were certainly opened this past weekend.  A friend of mine is moving into a smaller house so she decided to sell some of her things.  In a couple of hours, she listed approximately 60 items on Kijiji (60 items would take about one to two weeks on eBay), using basic pictures and short descriptions -- no rules, regulations or fees.  These were smaller items -- clothing, household goods, DVD's and CD's.  She earned more in one weekend than I've  earned in the last six months.  She still can't understand why I would spend so much time editing pictures and writing descriptions, and adhering to all of eBay's policies, let alone the time to package.  I believe she is wiser than me 🙂

Thanks very much.  As soon as I saw this, it occurred to me that I hadn't received this bulletin/newsletter for some time.  I used to get it every day so I just subscribed again.

Re: So Many Listings with No Views

I searched for: Lancome bi-facil eye makeup remover from the ebay home page.

(for certain this is the first time I've ever searched for eye makeup remover on ebay!)

On .CA yours came up #11 of 79

On .COM yours came up #19 of 258  (there were 4 sponsored listings above yours)

So the good news is that it is coming up in some search results!!!

Later addition, I realized I hadn't looked for the ungrouping stuff, and in both my searches (both times I repeated to be sure) I don't have any 'ungroup" box yet..... so my results don't speak to what the grouping does....

Re: So Many Listings with No Views

Hi 'jt' -- I did a search for the Lancome Bi-Facil on both .ca and .com just now, and your listing shows up as #12 of 80 on .ca and #19 of 259 on .com.  I got the same results with my alternate ID.

Clearly something odd is going on in the background.  However, I question whether the drop in sales is directly related to search.  I'm a bit of a canary in the coal mine in this respect    because I'm in a very unusual seller on eBay, in the sense that I have many products that literally can't be purchased anywhere else and are unique in the world (I do have a couple of U.S. competitors selling somewhat comparable patterns, but not the same).

So, for example, doing a search on .com with my alternate ID using "Edwardian blouse pattern", my listings are 7 of the 21 listings shown.   Using a search for "1912 Blouse Pattern", I have 6 out of 8 listings shown (the rest of which are actually not relevant results for these keywords).

should be getting a good share of the views, watchers, and sales, right?  Yet those numbers have dropped precipitously in the past 3 months, and this month I had a "first" on eBay in over 15 years of selling -- nearly an entire month without a sale!  My last sale was Jan. 28th, and I just sold two items yesterday.

Admittedly I'm not running discounts or promotions at the moment, but that hasn't made much difference in the past.  People can't buy what I sell anywhere else.  It's a dismal prospect, continuing to pay 20% to 25% fees each month, but perhaps things other than eBay's own efforts are affecting sales.  It's nearly the same story on the other site where I sell, so I have to conclude that factors other than eBay itself are at work.  Who knows what exactly!  Too many sites selling too much stuff to not enough buyers?  Or the "Trump effect".   All I know is that items that once got snapped up in a flash are now just sitting, and sitting, and sitting.

Thank you for searching.  Your comment made me laugh!

It appears that I am showing up, but the grouping/ungrouping function may be unstable right now, resulting in anomalies.

Re: So Many Listings with No Views

Thanks rose, for searching.  Your results are the same as @ricarmic.

I agree with you that the drop in sales is due to more than poor search placement.  Too many people have unusually low sales and these people are trying to determine why.  In my case, I wasn't too concerned at first because the three months of low/no sales followed two months of excellent sales, so I chalked it up to the usual ebb and flow of selling on eBay.  Then I was certain that the 0 views on half of my listings was causing this drop.  But perhaps the counter is not working properly and it may be associated with the randomness of this group/ungroup feature.

I have often viewed your items which are both beautiful and unique.  I presumed that you had high percentage of regular customers who specifically wanted what you were offering.  Even if they aren't always buying, they are probably always looking to see any new items you've added.  I did a search for the item "Edwardian blouse pattern" and got the same result  as you.  And, you're right, you should be getting a good share of the views, watchers, and sales.

There's more at play here than this seller needs to fix or try this; and that seller has to fix or try that.  When so many long-time sellers who consciously adhere to eBay's ever-changing policies have a dramatic loss in sales, we're looking for answers.  I wish I had one.

I had a brief look at the link to the 2018 Spring Seller Update that mj provided and we know there will be much said about this in the weeks ahead.  As soon as I saw the recommendation for "30 Day Free Returns" and "eBay Guaranteed Delivery",  I closed the window ... for today.

It's right at the top under Announcements. Maybe the new format makes it harder to find if you don't yet know where to look, it appeared yesterday afternoon, or late morning.

Wow... that grouping really bites.
Question. What is the link on the far right about, where it says something like ' 4 more buying options and then below a price brand new lowest price' ?

Re: So Many Listings with No Views

That takes you to the Product Page which is supposed to be a collection of items that are the same as the Top Pick. Except in my categories, the data is always wrong. Like all wrong, the matches made don't even make sense, it's like they collected random items and smushed them all together. A buyer isn't getting what is listed on that section. It's heavily flawed. In Toys anyway. I cannot speak for other areas.

Re: So Many Listings with No Views

Here is an example of that which I am speaking. This Product Page.  Literally every field of data is mismatched, the photos to title to each and every item specific. These might all be Disney Cars but that is where it ends. There are 500+ different characters in many different versions, some valuable and some not. They cannot be confused.
