TRS Discounts & Handling Time

I list on .com

I just changed all my listings from a 1 day handling time to a 3 day handling time, but I'm really fine with 1 day.

Now I just saw that the 20% discount only applies to items with a 1 day handling time, and I assume that will soon change to a 10% discount.

Is that true for Canadians listing on .com as well, and/or are there any changes to that when we go to a 10% discount?

I know I posted here before I made that change and asked about this some time ago but I was led to believe that I would still get the 20% (or 10%) discount even with a 3 day handling time.

What did I miss?

Re: TRS Discounts & Handling Time

Canadian Sellers if they qualify for TRS (either for US Sales or Global) get the 20% fvf (soon to be 10%) discount regardless of handling time.

Please don't tell anyone south of the border....they would freak out that they are being treated like second class citizens (sad!)

Re: TRS Discounts & Handling Time

Thank You for clearing that up for me.

That's the way I recalled it being posted here, but I also see this when I go to the Dashboard.  This is from eBay.ca and it seems contradictory:

""Save more on your final value fees
As a Top Rated Seller, you get 20% off final value fees, as well as a seal on your listings, when you offer same or 1 day handling time, and, for most categories, a 30 day return policy.""

I have TRS status and I have a 3-5 day handling time and a no return policy.

Those requirements are for the Top Rated Plus seal on ebay.com -- eBay's copy and paste method of rule details between the .com and .ca sites often has text which should have been deleted or better modified.

Global Top-rated program

Sellers who meet all the Global Top-rated seller performance requirements receive the following benefits:

  • Priority customer support
  • 20% 10% discount on final value fees (on item price portion only)
  • A badge on listing pages on eBay.ca

USA Top-rated program

For a listing to receive the Top Rated Plus seal, both same business day or 1 business day handling and a 30-day (or longer) return policy with a money back option must be offered.

Re: TRS Discounts & Handling Time

Thanks for the clarification.

I changed my handling time from 1 to 3 days and I really like it this way.

My actual handling time hasn't changed, but with an official 3 day handling time it just feels like I can ship at my leisure.  Kinda like that.

Also, I've noticed that some sellers feel that buyers prefer shorter handling times.  However, I've searched my listings and if handling time appears somewhere in the listing I can't find it so it's highly unlikely that buyers can either.

Nope! The handling time does not always get displayed, I never figured out why it does on some listings but doesn't show on others.

Where is does show up (sort of) is in the estimated delivery time which matters to some buyers of some items.

Personally the "under promise and over deliver" works for me as it does for many Canadian sellers because most buyers already expect slower delivery when they purchase from a foreign seller.

The information posted by others above regarding Global TRS is correct.  At least for the time being, Global TRS requirements are less onerous than for US TRS or TRS Plus.  So Canadian sellers will continue to get the (now 10%) discount, for what it's worth.

I changed my handling time a few months ago from 1 to 2 days primarily to add some leeway to eBay's often erroneous delivery estimates -- even though I almost always ship the same day the sale occurs.  It also gives me a bit of breathing room when a winter weather event delays my getting to the P.O.

As far as I can tell, changing my handling time has had little effect on sales.  I really don't think too many buyers bother looking at handling time in listings.  In any case I always send my buyers a personal note with confirmation of the date of shipping and my own estimate of expected delivery.

Here's where the information is located -- look under the "Shipping" tab on any listing.  This particular listing of mine is on .com, but I believe the handling time is in the same place on .ca, just before the "Returns" section.  Notice that it states: "within "X" days of receiving cleared payment", which does protect the seller in cases where a buyer pays by eCheck or other non-instantaneous payment, i.e. the delivery timeline clock doesn't start until payment actually clears.

This is interesting.  As a buyer I have wondered why I sometimes couldn't find the stated handling time.  However, it seems to me it's always been displayed on my own listings.  As you say, I think it's moot for most buyers anyway.

I have always subscribed to the "under-promise and over-deliver" philosophy of selling online.  Actually, in my roughly 10 years of selling on eBay, I can't recall one customer ever complaining to me about the total delivery time involved in a purchase, let alone handling time.  (I sell primarily to the U.S., so those who do remember we're a different country probably expect reasonable delays).

For me that makes eBay's cross-border delivery estimates to my buyers completely superfluous and unnecessary.  I was doing fine before those rules were introduced.  But I'm stuck with them, so I increased my handling time, not for my buyers' sake, but ironically as extra protection against eBay itself.  (Sad!)

Re: TRS Discounts & Handling Time

OK, thanks, so that explains that.

I've never been able to find handling time and as far as I know it doesn't (and never has)  appeared on any of my listings.  (Could be wrong.)

Interesting. It does not show handling time on .com when I click on the link above but does show the 3 day handling time on .ca.

Using Firefox browser on Windows 10 not that this would seem to matter.

I have my country set to the default when I login which is Canada and that shows up with my correct postal code on .com and .ca. I can think of no reason other than this is another eBay glitch.

I just tried another browser on this computer (Opera) and get the same results. Then on my iPad using the Safari browser and same results. No handling time showing on .com.

On the iPad using the latest eBay mobile app, I see the handling time. I assume the app is looking on ebay.ca Canada but I do not know much about the app.

I have never NOT seen handling time on any listing, mine or others, on any of the ebay sites I am browsing which regularly include ebay.com ebay.ca ebay.co.uk and eby.com/au.

Try entering "Canada" in the country box and see what happens.  This is odd.
