I have an item I want to sell worth about $1500-2000. I know the 3rd Party Reshippers like Chit Chats and DYK won't take items worth over $800.
When shipping an item from Canada to US, what process and what courier will I need in order to do this?
For anything over $750 you do need to get signature confirmation so that you are covered by seller protection if the buyer files an item not received claim. There is no signature you will lose the claim even if there is delivery confirmation.
Canada Post Xpresspost USA does have a signature automatically included at no extra charge.
Afaik there are no special requirements or extra forms to fill out (other than the usual customs form) unless an item is over $2000. If I'm wrong on that, hopefully someone will correct me.
I'm sure that all couriers to the US also have services that have a signature requirement.
Because the item is over the $800 minimus for the US, they may be charged duty if the item is dutiable as well as a customs fee if you use CP/USPS. If you use a courier the buyer will be charged duty if the duty is dutiable as will as various collection and handling fees. You need to check the different couriers for charges. However, if you use an express service with a courier, I believe that any extra handling charges are included in the shipping cost so the buyer would just be charged duty. But you should doublecheck that as well.
I always use Canada Post not only to USA but elsewhere in the world. They insure the items up to $1000Cdn. and I have never had any trouble. I use Express Post with signature. My items include jewelry, crystal and china. Been doing it over 20 years!
