eBay Gift Card Scam

I think my wife got caught up in a scam just 3 hours ago or so, and we've been trying to reach Ebay via phone call, social media platform, and email, but no reply yet.

Appreciate if someone can help out on the best way to reach out to eBay or the best way to go about this.

Short story:

My wife applied for few jobs online for her to work from home, one of them was data entering.

They called her for interview over the phone and was told later that she passed and will be trained for the job as they need a data entry specialist as soon as possible. Name of the company was said to be "CarPhone WareHouse". She was told she would have to sit for a training to put her through how to use the application for the data entry. She sat for the training today over the internet (over chat to be precise) with the trainer. The guy told her she needed to download and install the software on her laptop. He said the license needs to be purchased on Ebay, and it was gonna cost a 2,000 dollars. He said he was going to send in a cheque straight into her account, and on her confirmation, she can do the gift card purchase, which he did. My wife checked her account and saw that there was a cheque deposit of 2000$ but the bank only allowed 200$ to go through to her main account, and 1800$ put on hold until the cheque is verified. Seeing that, she went ahead to buy a 1000$ gift her from her savings. On telling the guy about the purchase, he told her to send the receipt, scratch the card and send to him over whatsApp for accounting book keeping, which she did. He then told her she bought 1000$ card, remaining 1000$ card. She called me to tell me about this, but I knew something was fishing. So, told her, the cheque is not yet verified according to the details on the account, and that means, should the cheque is withdrawn, that means it's a scam. I told her to tell the guy that she doesn't have any cash again at hand to buy the balance. The guy requested for a snapshot for the account to confirm that the cheque is still withheld. We sent him the snapshot but cancelled all important details. He then said, the training will have to continue tomorrow with the hope that the cheque will have gone through by then, and said bye. I kinda feel something is wrong here, then I went online to see frauds on gifts card, and realized, there are a lot of scammers now using job hunt due to COVID to scam people, cause they know, most are desperate for a job right now.

We've been trying to contact Ebay to block the card, or at least do something to render it unusable, or be able to track the person, but yet to get through.

Appreciate if anyone can help with info or details to go from here. We've called the RCMP, but the unit in charge of frauds is closed, that means till tomorrow. And I think we still have shot to get it back since it's still less than 4 hours.

Thanks.

Call this site.

They are the RCMP and provincial police.

Call the bank and make sure the staff understands what is happening. Thank them for putting a Hold on the phoney cheque.

EBay has nothing to do with this, but the Boardies here, who are just ordinary buyers and sellers, not even staff members, may have more and better information.

Call the phone-busters --Canadian Anti Fraud Call Centre IMMEDIATELY!

eBay Gift Card Scam

my heart goes out to you,  carphonewarehouse was closing early this year,, i would call the rcmp, and give them all your details, unfortunately, scratched gift cards, are not trackable after they are scratched..

Perhaps, they can track back from the internet address you have used to them.. I wish you all the best, but perhaps if they keep reaching out to you, you can more info from them, to help the rcmp, in their investigation..
