And will those bidders ever return?

This does make sense since the seller has decided what she actually wants to get for the purse.
Perhaps she has learned that the purse normally goes for a higher price than where she was starting her auction and raised her price to match.
Perhaps she decided to move to Fixed Price?
In any case, if you wanted the purse, why not bid when you see it?
Bid your maximum but only bid once.
If you are the only bidder, you win at the opening price.
