Can or Should I add reference number in place of tracking number?

I sell items that I ship as small packets and no tracking number is provided but a reference number. So can or should I add the reference number in place of the tracking number after each sale? Thanks!!

While it is not specifically useful, I used to do that a lot. At that time Small Packet included insurance, which is no longer true.

However, in the interest of selling the sizzle and not the steak, providing this invoice number reassures your customer that you actually did buy postage and therefore posted his parcel. If he has other problems (damage or delay) he would be bringing it to you for resolution. Neither tracking nor insurance provides any benefit to the buyer.

Thanks for the answer and what I really mean is add the reference # in place of adding the tracking # in my Ebay summary next to :        Tracking number: [ADD]    and not to email them the reference #..
