I live in Ontario Canada. I want to buy a camera from Japan, will I have to pay import duties?

Camera is around eight hundred dollars!

Probably no import duties but probably

HST,  and a handling fee depending on how it is shipped.

and whether it gets checked by customs.

If it's ~$800 and assuming it's properly declared, you most likely will have to pay taxes plus a handling fee charged by the shipping company.

Canada does not have a Free Trade treaty with Japan, which may be why most "japanese" cars are built in North America.

Expect to pay duty

Expect to pay HST/GST/PST as charged  in your province.

Expect to pay a service fee for customs brokerage of between $10 and $25 or more to the shipper.
