I shipped an item and it arrived damaged

So i shipped an item and it arrived damaged.  I have no problem refunding the buyer, I'm just wondering if the shipper will need the item in order to re-imburse me because I did insure it.  I filed a claim with the shipper.

If the item is required back - who pays for the shipping back to me?  Me or the Buyer?

Thanks

Hi ..ask your buyer to retain as received in case Canada Post requires proof of damage.(unlikely) I believe that proof is not required for destinations outside Canada.

If it was required back and was my item , i would refund and pay return.

The normal procedure is to refund your buyer right away, then wait for the insurance claim to be settled to receive your refund from the shipper.
