"Open Box" warranty? does it vary from seller to seller, or does the manufacturer's warranty stand?

Specifically, an IPad from Apple ...

If you buy an item online (not just from eBay)basically you should not expect ANY warranty.

Only authorized dealers can give you a useable warranty. Some authorized dealers do sell online.

The basic reason is that the manufacturer cannot see how the item was treated.

It may be from an insurance claim-- after the warehouse fire or truck crash.

Or it might be refurbished.

It might even be stolen.

Or a counterfeit, right down to the paperwork.

Or it could just be surplus to the honest owners needs.

When you buy an electronic item cheaply online, you are trading the low price for the possibility that the item will not work as expected.

We all know iPads are made by Apple, so

I hope you mean that you would be buying the iPad from Apple.

If you purchase refurbished or open-box directly from Apple, there will typically be a one year warranty on the item.

Warranty begins to diminish substantially as you distance from Apple, as BestBuy is only 90 days, and it only gets worse with other vendors.

Not only that, Apple will not service it at all if BestBuy or anyone else has physically opened up the iPad.

Apple's warranty is voided by any non-authorized party working on the device.

Beware pursuing that deal that is too good to be true... It usually is.

Only purchase electronics from authorized distributors.

Save yourself the grief.
