Provincial sales tax in an item purchased from another province.

I was just required to pay BC provincial sales tax on an item from Ontario. This has never happened to me before now. Is this a new practice and is it legal.

If the seller also has a presence in BC such as a store and is registered to collect BC tax then they are required to collect it.  If they aren’t registered to collect BC tax but are registered to collect gst than they should just be collecting gst.    It’s possible that they misunderstand what they should be collecting ...it wouldn’t be the first time that I’ve seen that.

The buyer pays the applicable taxes. If you have a Status Indian card, or are have Diplomatic status, you can keep all your receipts and  get a nice rebate on your income taxes.

BC charges GST and PST separately, so a GST registered seller in ON, would be required to charge you GST but not Ontario HST, which is both federal and provincial.
