Possible Border Strike Looming for August 6

Dear valued customer.

The union representing CBSA employees, the Public Service Alliance of Canada-Customs and Immigration Union (PSAC-CIU), has announced they have acquired a mandate to strike from their members.

While PSAC-CIU advises they could potentially initiate a work stoppage as early as August 6, 2021, the Union and CBSA have returned to the negotiating table.

Both PSAC-CIU and CBSA have also confirmed that in the event of a work stoppage, select CBSA employees will be designated as essential, and continue to perform their essential job functions to maintain some CBSA operations.

While importers and exporters could expect potential border disruptions and delays if a work stoppage is initiated, CBSA indicated in a recent communication to stakeholders that the Agency would respond quickly to any job action or work disruption in order to maintain the safety and security of the Canadian border, ensure compliance with Canadian laws, and keep the border open to facilitate the flow of legitimate goods and travel.

UPS will continue to monitor the situation closely. We will update you on major developments as information becomes available from the main stakeholders.

FWIW- the usual strategy of the unions is using rotating strikes.

This has several advantages for them.

The members don't lose pay.

The flow of work is disrupted but not stopped, so most of the public are not affected.

When they go back to work, there isn't a huge pileup to deal with.

Management is never sure where the next disruption will be.

The last few postal strikes we've had used the rotating strike.

The biggest disruption was when Management went on strike and locked out the workers.
