Shipping fragile item canada to USA over $200

Question 1

Fragile item value $200 ...box 8 pounds - 17 in x 16 in x 8 in 

E Bay requires a signature right???for any satisfaction.

Canada Post wants $82.26 postage for signature .

Please help me with best way to ship my box insured for breakage and signature going to New York City USA

Very fragile item so do want insurance in case of breakage.

Thanks for kind help in advance.

Question 2 - jewellery over $200 canada to USA - will fit in padded envelope.  Will there be duty on their end?  Best shipping advice?

Question 1....  I used to ship large breakables ... double boxed.  The second box would be three inches bigger `than the first box,  on all sides.

Your second box would measure  23 inches x 22 inches x 14 inches.

Crumpled newspaper filled the space between the two boxes.

The shipping cost would be based on a volumetric calculation.

This double box option protected my breakables, such as Chalet Glass and Blue Mountain Pottery, very well

Question 2....  Ship in a box with a protective filling...  fully insured  and with tracking.  Something at this value should never be shipped without insurance and tracking.... or in anything other than a solid cardboard box.

Were you to file a breakage claim with Canada Post for an item classified as fragile the claim would very likely be denied. 

Excerpt from Canada Post's breakage exclusions list.

c) Canada Post shall have no liability for damage of shipments containing Fragile Items. Fragile Items include but are not limited to ceramic,
glass, porcelain, mirrors, crystal, pottery, china, perishable items or items requiring refrigeration or temperature-controlled transportation
