Making a purchase with the seller after the posting has closed

What is the safest way for me to purchase an item with the seller AFTER the posting has closed? The item is no longer listed but the seller and I have agreed on a purchase price. I want to be protected. Can anyone help with advice?

Ask the seller to relist as 'Buy it Now' at the price and shipping cost agreed upon.

The seller can provide the item number and/or the link to the listing.

Thank you. An eBay customer service rep also advised to have seller relist as a private, buy it now price, directed only to me rather than to the public.

Many eBayers don't realize that Paypal is used by other businesses as an anonymizing payment service.

We took membership payments for a science fiction convention I used to run through Paypal.

One reason this is done is that PP has a very strong Buyer Protection policy, even when sales are not arranged through eBay.
