According to Canada Post 2012 Annual Report:

"Over 90% of customer calls to contact centres have been outsourced to an external supplier.
This has allowed us to achieve significant operating cost savings, while improving the customer experience.
in addition, customer service levels improved, helping Canada Post achieve higher customer service ratings in 2012."

This is an amazing statement from Canada Post.  Basically they state that service has improved since they outsourced it.  What does it say about their staff? They could not provide quality service? And they wonder why they have labour relation problems at CP!

Did You know?

While reading the 2012 Canada Post Annual Report (yes, I enjoy reading numbers), I came across this information regarding parcels handled by Canada Post annually (page 63 of the report):

100,000,000 parcels for domestic delivery - an increase of 6.0% over 2011

11,000,000 outbound parcels (leaving Canada) - an increase of 2.6% over 2011

42,000,000 inbound parcels (entering Canada) - an increase of 9.4% over 2011

Conclusions: the bulk of parcels handled by Canada Post are domestic. Imports are growing faster than exports (it should be noted that the exchange rate between the US and Cdn dollars were relatively stable in 2011 and 2012).

Canada Post received $173,000,000 for handling those parcels coming from outside the country.  That works out to slightly more than $4.00 per parcel (that is revenue for Canada Post - nothing to do with taxes).

For those with a bit of time on their hand and interest to learn more about Canada Post - from their perspective - you can read their Annual Report (136 pages) here:

If it is costing more to deliver every item than is charged to send those items, an increase in business means bigger losses.

It may take some time to understand the financial picture of Canada Post or any other very large corporation.  As costs go up, prices for products or services must go up.  I do not see the problem.
