A Canada Post building was evacuated early this morning after an orange powder was found in a sorting machine.

Firefighters were called to 951 Highbury Ave. N. about 2:30 a.m. and evacuated the building.

“It appears that the powdered substance, whatever it was, was in an envelope and it went through the sorting machine,” said fire spokesperson Rick Jefferson.

No one was hurt.

A Canada Post official said the substance turned out to be protein powder.

Because of the evacuation, mail for Tillsonburg, Aylmer, Strathroy and St. Thomas will be delayed about 90 minutes, said Canada Post spokesperson Tom Creech.

I would have guessed it was rust.........probably from a paper clip on some urgent correspondence mailed in 1994, just making its way through CP's normal processing system...............Michael

after the Anthrax scare that did kill a few postal workers in the US I have no problem with Canada Post shutting things down until they could find out what the powder was.
