Even items from Canada are sold in US dollars. Is there a reason for this?

The USA is the largest economy in the world.

Everyone understands the US dollar in relation to their own currency.

Americans don't understand any other currency.

Currency of the auction is strictly controlled by the seller. Most Canadian sellers will sell in US dollars to make the exchange rate margins. many buyers get caught up into an auction and rarely take the exchange rate into effect. Sellers can potentially make more money after exchange rate conversion.....
