From what I understand, if all us PowerSellers agree to ship under one account, we could save up to 50% for shipping with UPS! Meaning that their prices for Standard Service would start at only $7 for 5-day delivery. If we all use the same account we would have to work with UPS so that they could set it up in such a way that we could each pay separately for our shipments but still be considered one "organization".
Has anybody heard about this? Anybody interested or have any more information?

I would love to finally have a solution to shipping!

I cant ship my products with UPS because of insurance issues so I am out of the picture.

One word of caution however, as I read your comments in the other thread about UPS talking about CP.

First I am not on the CP bandwagon. I would drop them in a heart beat as they have hurt my business severely in the first year of operation over cubic weight.

I negotiated with both CP and UPS last December. The UPS rep told me all sorts of stuff about the government breaks for CP and other crap.

Well aside from the insurance problem in my shipping my products with UPS, it was the lies they said about CP.

If they thought that I would listen to their BS without doing my homework then they are smoking something that costs more than I make in a month.

There is enough crap about CP to turn away potential clients without UPS having to resort to lies in order to get new business.

UPS does not make ANY profit in Canada from delivery. They are subsidizing that part of their business from the brokerage fees they are charging on imports in order to acquire more of the Canadian market. How long do you think that will last?

I have had a lot of runnarounds with UPS. I have some inside contacts there and I wouldnt believe a thing out of their mouths about what they could do for me.

If you are happy with them and they serve your business well, then that is what is important.

I'm using UPS for over 2 years (mostly to US). Personally, I have no problem with them. Ones or twice package was damaged (according to my customers side), but UPS paid insurance in a bit.

In comparison, when my package was lost with CP, they refuse to pay insurance, because I did not purchase a signature option. The pickle is that I did pay to insure the package (sic!). Basically, you have to buy signature option too, otherwise your insurance payment is waste of money.

Another interesting discovery is that UPS charge less for delivery of large boxes (like PC) within large metropolis (GTA in my case). Keeping in mind that they pick up boxes for free... it's a deal!

Of cause small packet price is the blast and nobody can beat it, plus domestic rates are way better then UPS.

To finish with my whining about CP 🙂 ...

My experience with US Expedited was total Disaster. Out 10 shipments: 3 was lost and 4 was returned to me because their servers crashed and they did lost my shipping manifest. Other 3 were in transit for 4 weeks! At least I got insurance back. I was very close to get bunch of negative feedbacks. No more US Expedited for me.

And the last, if you submit a shipment with CP on-line tool, it is very tough to cancel it (need to call helpdesk and give them D-number), if you can not provide D-number (because their server crashed while processing your request for instance) you must to pay your invoice first and then fight for a couple of months for refund. Total waste of time.

I wish they do have a real competitor.

I hope my message is not sound too flaming. Just want to share my experience.

I have NEVER requested signature option on my CP shipments and they have paid 2 out of 2 claims I have made. My rep in fact told me NOT to request signature option.

All my items are picked up by CP twice per week from my location at no charge. The drivers have been very courteus and n the odd time if my packages arent ready at my pre-described time, the driver will make his rounds and come back an hour or so later.

I can reach my rep at CP with a phone call or an email and always get an immediate response, not within a day but within minutes.

I compared the discounted CP and UPS pricing that I was given by each and found that for my shipments, CP was less expensive.

The only change was when CP started charging me based on cubic weight for 3 months however they are now only charging me based on cubic weight for perhaps 1 out of every 4 items and seem to be preferring to charge me based on actual weight.

When CP first introduced US Expedited, it was unreliable due to USPS, not CP. I had several packages taking over 4 weeks to be delivered however I have recently been receiving positive response from people about the fast economical shipping of my products into the US with Expedited.

I do not love CP. If you read comments I have made on other threads, this is something that has come through very clearly about my position with CP.

I feel that their discounting policies stink and should in fact be investigated. However, I have not shared the same experiences that you have related about CP, in fact quite the opposite.

I find that in terms of service, it breaks down when my goods cross the US border and are turned over to USPS.
CP has done an excellent job for me with all of my Canadian shipments and I am often astounded at how inexpensive I am able to ship some products out on a Friday afternoon from Ottawa and find that they have been delivered to my customer in Calgary on Monday morning.

As I collect shipping costs from my customers, I have never had a customer in Canada, the US or Internationally tell me that my shipping charges were too high and often I have enough built in to what I charge to pay for my packaging materials as well.

As long as i am not out of pocket and the costs are accepted by the customers, my only true concern is that the packages are delivered in time and in good condition and I have have had very few instances where I could say I was not pleased with CPs overall service.

Whatever works best for you, that is what is important. Clearly CP is not the answer for your shipping needs and on the other side of the coin, UPS doesnt stand up to the plate for me.

Malcolm - Could I ask you how you got into such close relations with CP (rep, e-mail, etc.)? How did you manage to get a pickup? I think this would do wonders for me if I didn't have to drive to an outlet.

Also, do you use the CP Desktop software or Online version?

Thanks so much for your help!

BTW - I am negotiating with UPS on the behalf of Canadian Powersellers. It is not going to easy but I hope to have some update about it by Monday. (From what I understand so far, they might need to sit down with reps from our "organization". Do you think this would be possible or should eBay do it for us?)

Thanks again to everyone!

Daniel

I looked into this as well (pooling accounts) but the biggest issue seemed to lie in billing - I was told one person/company would have to be the "main" one and on the hook for any nonpayment from the others

All I did was ask.
I made some initial, general inquiries and was immediately given a rep. I originally took items to the Post Office myself for a month or so and my rep kept asking when I was ready to have my items picked up, as he had previously provided me with a pick up authorization.

As soon as I signed the form, CP began picking up. They wanted to do daily pick ups but I told them I was only going to have my proiducts ready 2 X per week.

I had arguments with them over cubic weights vs actual weights for several months and either I partially won that argument or CP is slipping however I am seldom charged based on cubic weight.

I dont use any electronic shipping tools which totally upsets my rep but this is my business and I have reasons for the way I run my business at this time.

I have a negotiations background as a business consultant and I use those skills to get my deals with CP or whoever and I think that I have been very successful, hence no serious complaints over my relationship with CP.

Here's my 2 cents on this solution.

1. UPS rep in my area says and I quote that if your shipping items that you have sold on ebay that they DO NOT offer insurance.
2. UPS is ok if your in a big city..will not work for my business model as I'm located in rural canada.

now CP
1. I have a CP rep and if he takes more then 5 minutes to e-mail me I call him to see if he's sick as he has a very quick response time and is very easy to work with.
2. CP reps are keep in the dark about most things going on and this list knows more about the rates then they do till they ask.
3. CP loses about 10% of my packages a month and to me this is not there fault but the carrier after them.
4. CP needs to get a better working model for the US side as I have had customers pay for 6 day delivery and it has taken 4 weeks.
5. I use the On-line business option and have not had any problems other then slow at times.

Has anyone used FEDEX ground here???? what are they like????

aa-surplus, I would ask the UPS rep if they have the same policy regarding shipping for Henry's Camera eBay sales.

UPS offers insurance to businesses that use its services. I don't believe that they discriminate over "how" the item was sold. The rep may not have explained that UPS does not want to offer insurance for personal effects.

Re: UPS insurance.

As it says in UPS standard terms insurance up to $100 included in any shipment. I did claimed insurance several times in last couple years and have never had a problem (although I never discussed with UPS rep that item was sold on e-bay; I don't see how is that relevant).

Also, somebody mentioned that packages over $200 require customer SIN. Also, have never get that problem even with $1000 items. Other side have to pay custom broker fee, but its standard business practice.

Re: CP pick ups

I really puzzled here. I tried to get CP to pick up my parcels a few times, but the best they was able to offer is fixed day(s) pick with $6/15 charge for pick up. I don't like that inflexibility. Basically they want me to sit a wait one day a week for their pick up truck (time is not guaranteed). Probably my volume is not big enough?

I tried FedEx and CanPar, but is the same as UPS, so I stick to first one (UPS).

I think if you do not do 20 parcels per week you get charged the $6.00.

Do you think that I would need have a commercial account with CP or is the PS account enough to be eligible for the pick-up? I send about 20 packages a day so I guess that would allow me to get the pick-up and rep?

Anatoly - I have tried FedEx ground and that service is heavenly. BUT (!) you need to pay a weekly charge for that service and I only ship using courier if the buyer pays for it, so its not for me!

Thanks again to everyone!

acurael,

You are right about the money problem. That is what I am trying to sort out with UPS. My rep is really good at these things (or so he says...)! But might have found a solution! Just like a company that has more than one branch (in our case- quite a lot of branches ;), we should be able to open one account for us all since it is one "organization" and then have separate billing for the different "branches" or locations of our "organization". It would not be easy to set up but as I said, the savings would be HUGE (again, something we need to negotiate)! If eBay could look into this for us it would be great as they have more power than myself or any of us. Moira, do you think you could give eBay the heads up to the idea?

Thanks again!

Sure thing Anthony! I got your e-mail! As soon as we get things worked out with UPS, I will post a discussion asking for people that want to join. Right now there is no deal yet but it is good to know that some of you want to join already so that we could show UPS that we would be serious.
