Are sellers allowed to request off-eBay communications?

A seller has written in an item description that questions should be sent to his private email address. Said email address has the "@" sign and the "." (dot) sign replaced by "AT" and "DOT", respectively. I believe the seller is trying to circumvent some sort of eBay mechanism to prevent the posting of emails. Is this in violation of any eBay policy?

Said seller has 200+ feedbacks and is at 100%. Most if not all of their other items include the email address written in the way above.

I can sympathise with the seller, I find the design of ebay messages aesthetically repugnant.
