invoice needed to cross us border

truck crossing customs officer (Mr Groucho) wanted an invoice with my commercial goods, as I crossed into the US today he requested the invoice (yet let me go in without it) and I have no idea what he's talking about - is the invoice ebay supplies good enough?

Is the invoice more complicated than eBay's?

I didn't see a thread about this, apologies as this is probably a known issue.

Are you enrolled in the Nexus program?

If you are bringing goods into the USA in order to use the often cheaper USPS shipping rates, you should get one.
