RE: Managed Payments- slightly less frequently asked questions.

On the whole this post was helpful and even reassuring.

But it does not allow for more detailed questions.

Can I receive funds in USD if I list on eBay.com?

While you will still be able to list on eBay.com using a Canadian bank account, you will not initially be able to be paid out in USD. We understand that this is an important and unique distinction for some businesses, and our goal is to make this as seamless a transition as possible. We will activate your account when the features of managed payments meet the needs of your business.

I sell on dotCOM in USD. I have a US bank account. A bank account with an American bank (not a Canadian bank account in USD).

Can I have my USD payments sent to my American bank?

Many business sellers who have been in mail order for decades, some of us before eBay existed, have American bank accounts and would prefer to use them, avoiding the problems and cost of currency exchange.

I interpret the statement "you will not initially be able to be paid out in USD" to mean that, as things stand, Canadian sellers currently cannot have USD payments sent to a bank account on American soil.

RE: Managed Payments- slightly less frequently asked questions.

The other major point it does not address is where there will be savings and when will orders be costing us more in fees.

Simplified Fees: You will pay only one final value fee, consisting of a category-based percentage of the total amount of the sale, plus a fixed fee per order, with no third-party payments processing fees. Your final value fees will be automatically deducted from your sales proceeds, and the rest paid out to your bank account. Most sellers can expect to see overall savings.*?????

My interpretation is Canadian sellers who primarily sell on ebay.com are being advised to NOT register at this time as features of MP will not meet their needs at launch.
The person(s) who wrote that are implying that those sellers are unlikely to be "required " to register until the USD to US bank account feature is implemented. They'll probably be one of the last groups to be forced out of PayPal.

Personally, there was a time not so long ago that I made a sizeable minority of my sales on ebay.com. Unfortunately, those sales all but evaporated with the ramp-up of PL and change to GTC .... still don't know why exactly. I'll probably get roped into MP much earlier than those with strong ebay.com sales.

RE: Managed Payments- slightly less frequently asked questions.

I've had an uptick (or better) in sales since the pandemic started shutting down Main Street, but that seems to have calmed down and returned to normal.

Poot.

It was noticeable that the uptick was very much in domestic sales. I normally sell over 80% to the USA but most recently that has dropped off, while Canadian sales have taken their place.

so for all the seller's that complained about losing the paypal fee of 2.9% of the sales tax, will now lose their category fee on this same sales tax..

I would have to assume that this is not legal, nor is it good for seller's, so instead of giving them 2.9% of all sales tax that they charge to USA buyers, i will now be losing close to 7%..

i just sold an item to a usa buyer who was charged 21$ tax,  so with MP, i will lose more money..

TRS status will become more valuable since under MP since the 10% discount off FVF will also apply to sales tax (currently it does not).

RE: Managed Payments- slightly less frequently asked questions.

I think that since these are sales to US buyers, we are not charged the 2.9% domestic rate, but the 3.4% * US rate on the Internet Sales Tax.

I'd be happy to hear that I am wrong.

*Or 3.7% -- I can never remember.

RE: Managed Payments- slightly less frequently asked questions.

"Will my eTRS final value fee discount continue when my account is enabled for managed payments?
If your item qualifies for the Top Rated Plus discount, you will continue to receive the 10% discount. On managed payments, your 10% discount will not only be applied to the item price as it is today, but on the total amount of the sale including shipping and tax. This will result in additional savings on most Top Rated Plus items."
A little confused on the PLUS within the answer. Canadian sellers get the 10% discount on ALL sales whether Global TRS and/or USA TRS. PLUS doesn't enter into the equation.
eBay, please clarify.

RE: Managed Payments- slightly less frequently asked questions.

That FAQ answer was obviously lifted directly from ebay.com where a sellers require top rated plus status to qualify for the discount. I think we can safely assume the statement should have been ammended for Canadian sellers but was not ... probably an oversight.

Nevertheless, I find it surprising that Global TRS sellers will qualify for potentially much larger discounts ... there's a policy ripe for future adjustment.

"i just sold an item to a usa buyer who was charged 21$ tax,  so with MP, i will lose more money.."

Same penalty for anything really heavy, bulky or using an express service and in turn having extremely high shipping. More fees involved. Something a seller is not profiting on. Just charging actual shipping with any handling fee. Charge a higher handling fee....Again pay more fees.

@femmefan1946

In an amongst all the other discussions there was a mention of items that were not permitted to be listed in Managed Payments (Not including the standard Restricted & Prohibited). In looking closer I just see that they would be automatically ended. One category was Currency.  Anyone know if there were any other weird exception categories would fall in this hornets nest OR if the list will vary between dot ca and dot com?

**Any listings that violate our policies will be automatically ended.

eg.

  • Coins, paper money, and virtual currency
  • Downloadable products and virtual items

The following list contains items that are most likely currently sold on eBay.

They will no longer be allowed on eBay with Managed Payments...

The following information is available for Canadian sellers that have successfully registered for Managed Payments.

  • Adult only items including sexual wellness and adult clothing
  • Alcohol, beer, spirits, and wine
  • Auction services
  • Bullion
  • Casino chips and gambling devices
  • Coins, paper money, and virtual currency
  • Downloadable products and virtual items
  • Gift cards, coupons, and vouchers
  • Inhalers and nebulizers
  • Lodging, timeshares, vacation packages, and car rentals
  • Motor vehicles
  • Real estate and cemetery plots
  • Smoking cessation products including nicotine patches and gum
  • Tickets for travel, events or experiences
  • Tobacco pipes, vaporizers, and other smoking accessories
  • Weight loss supplements, sports supplements, appetite control suppressants, and sleeping pills

@cumos55

Thanks. That's what I was able to find. I thought there were some other random categories that were not permitted, beyond that list. I know the coins  exception will affect many Canadian sellers.

there are many big bullion seller's on ebay, who do 100's of millions in sales a year. Apmex, and silver gold bull, their is no way ebay is going to make them stop selling, so it will be interesting to see the work around they come up with.

I did a quick search for listings using Canadian Coins....150,000 + Worldwide. Just over 100,000 for Canada. There are very likely more using other search criteria.

Wow.

That sounds as if eBay is ditching the entire eBayMotors category as well as the Adult Products.

I can see the "downloadable products" which have been Scam Central for decades, from buying feedback to outright fraud. And that goes for coupons and gift cards too.

Tobacco related products are already close to banned anyway.

But the entire numismatic and bullion category?  As @esclyons  says, that's a huge number of listings and a lot of small B&M dealers use eBay as an important supplement to their B&M shop. Another blow to Main Street.

RE: Managed Payments- slightly less frequently asked questions.

There was a book about buying coins on-line.

Seller can make a coin look better than it really is, and then sell it for good money.

Between cleaning and working a coin, and then photography,  buyers can be told a lie.

The final recommendation in the book ...

Always buy in person, do not buy on-line

The most interesting situation was the story of a buyer on-line  that took their collection that was purchase on-line,  to a local coin collector  and found out they had been "robbed" by the online seller's  lies.

any reputable seller won't clean a coin, i'm not saying it doesn't happen, but it will show up in a seller's feedback if they are cleaning coins, or doctoring photos...

1st rule of coins, is never clean them.
