Shipping amount was clearly indicated in auction-now shipper wants more-what are my rights?

Shipper says the shipping calculator didn't work correctly.

I've used the shipping calculator for years and frankly if I put in the right dimensions, I get out the right postage.

You are not required to pay more for shipping than the seller advertises.

Have you made any payment?

Explain politely to the seller that your bid was based on the total advertised cost of the purchase. If he is not willing to accept that, tell him to send you a Mutual Cancellation.

When and if that arrives, accept it promptly., always provided the seller has also refunded your payment.

Both of you will be released from the transaction, he gets some of his fees back, and both of you can leave appropriate feedback

If the seller tries an Unpaid Item Dispute, your answer would be that he demanded more money for shipping. EBay doesn't like that.

Just in case, the listing did give a shipping amount to Canada, right? If it didn't that's a whole other question.

Looks to me as though the seller calculated a shipping rate for First Class Mail International Letter when they meant to calculate a rate for First Class Mail International Package.

The price difference between the two services for items of the same weight used to be small to nothing, but with the last round of USPS rate increases, they're now more significant.

What's the seller asking now?  $8.55 instead of the stated $3.99?  While it is an eBay policy violation for a seller to ask for more than what's stated in the listing's shipping field and you could report the seller for that (not to mention it being poor customer service), you have to decide if you want the item badly enough to cut him some slack.  If it's a real issue, you could ask to cancel the sale.

I do note that another of the seller's current listings seems to have a more realistic shipping rate for a small figurine, so if the seller's trying to blame the calculator for his woes, he's either trying to put a smokescreen up or else he simply doesn't realize what that small error in selecting the shipping method did with its price calculation.

Yes I made the payment almost immediately based on the listing $3.99 USD (They are now asking 6.91USD). Yes the listing automatically shows the shipping amount to Canada. Thanks for your help.

In my experience I have either just cancelled or paid the extra.. Sometimes maybe I am just down to earth but sometimes I think it is just an honest mistake and nothing to do with poor customer service or a bad seller just a person selling on ebay doing what god made us to do make mistakes and learn from them... You are entitled to leave neg feedback if you want afterwards or just move on and call it a day..
