Amazing Customer (Seller) Support

Customer (seller) care and satisfaction have definitely reached a new level at Ebay Canada.  Just recently we received this from Ebay.

You have missed the deadline to register for eBay to manage your payments and, effective today, your ability to create, relist, and revise listings has been disabled. In addition, if you do not register by June 15th, all your live listings on eBay will be removed as well.

This relates to the system replacing Paypal - I think it is called Mis-managed Payments.

I really like to work under pressure so thankfully there was no advance warning or any reminder that our account would be completely suspended.  It also provided a new challenge since we now had to open a new bank account specifically to replace Paypal, which provided basic account services at no charge.  I really enjoy doing stuff like this just to keep in shape for real emergencies.

With our new account we get to spend an additional $300 - $400 annually in monthly account fees and additional transaction fees beyond the amount previously charged by Paypal.  This is really exciting since Canadian banks are really struggling right now so this is a great way to help them improve their profitability.

Another new feature is the inability to maintain both USD and CAD balances.  We used our USD at Paypal for inventory purchases and other US expenses.  Now Ebay will force currency conversion and scoop 4% in additional fees.  Further, it will now cost us about 4% to buy USD to fund purchases so this will also help the Canadian banks in their hour of need.  I was worried about Ebay profitability since they recently reduced the ebay bucks from 2% to 1% and then 1% to zero.  This incentive was obviously funded by customer (seller) fees and I was really pleased that Ebay kept all of the savings for themselves.  Both the currency conversion fees and ebay bucks savings will help keep Ebay afloat a little longer.

It has been a thrilling few weeks, and the customer (seller) support has been truly amazing, so I'm really looking forward to the future.  I can't wait for the next round of improvements so I can once again help Ebay achieve its objectives.

For customers (sellers) it's always onwards and upwards.

eBay Canada first sent active sellers notice of the switchover to Managed Payments in April 2020. An FAQ announcement was posted at the end of the following month. There have been a couple of Q&A sessions with Managed Payments specialists on these discussion boards in recent months. There’s been lots of discussion about this changeover on the eBay community boards.

Seeing as you like to work under pressure, you have my sympathies for not being able to read up on the new payment system and come up with a changeover strategy because of the lengthy lead up to your time to register.

Disagree folks.  For a major change like this, particularly one that affects the dollar end of things, it is not up to the seller to happen to read up on it and try to figure out the deadline.  Except you can't figure out a deadline,  as there is no universal deadline since MP is being rolled out over a time period.  There is no way ebay could manage all the transition at once.  Even if someone was aware, say from a year+ old notice, you are waiting for your individual notice.  General awareness of the change means nothing.  Even if you called Ebay they will not tell you a timeframe if you have not been notified.  I know, I called.

It could very well be that the OP did not get a notification, everything is not perfect, or they just thought it was more spam mail as we certainly get sent enough of it.     Even the email that was sent was couched as "Update you seller info" and did not have a proper subject line such as "Important, Mandatory Change to Funding Method, etc.".

If the OP missed or dismissed it, then they are being crammed down but notification was sent and that is unfortunate.

The idea that a seller not sent notice is to blame in any way is totally invalid.  The majority are dealing with listing and selling and not on the boards, etc.    Relying only on a notice sent over a year ago is not valid either.

This is a massive rollout and there are and will be hiccups, so a notice not being sent is not that crazy.

You may not agree, but that is fine.

Since this has been well publicized for over a year, the slow rollout might have felt like it would never happen.

What to do?

First I would use Time Away to put your active listings on a little vacation, while you get your account straightened out.

Then I would suggest signing up for a no-fee online chequing account that is not related to any of your personal chequing accounts.  Simplii is a branch of CIBC. Tangerine is TD, I think, but has some restrictions if you reside in Quebec.

No matter what these cybersavvy youngsters say, it will take a few days perhaps even a week to be ready to set up your MP account with the new account.

Fill in most of the info you are being asked for now, you don't have to do it all at once. It seems to save what you do fill.

And if you get the form with the demand for your SIN, ignore it. Some Yankee with only a dim idea of "not USA" stuck that in there.  You can use your driver's license or passport number instead.

When eBay tells you your MP account is ready to go, end the Time Away and move on.

It's really not rocket surgery.  If a technodolt like me can do it, anyone can.

Full disclosure: I've only got one of my four active accounts signed up, because I'm still annoyed about not being able to use an American bank account.

femmefan:  on the accounts you have not signed up for MP yet, have you received the 'all your listings will be removed by such and such date" email?

If so, has the deadline passed and if it has, did anything happen?

Re: Details and Universal Deadlines

Another part of this that has been brought up numerous times by many sellers was the only way for sellers to get a better understanding was by signing up and receiving those secret details AFTER the fact. (Many of those details were shared by sellers that had enrolled...Not directly from eBay.)

As for the past, there were many specific questions that were asked well over 2 years ago regarding MP that STILL have not been fully addressed. Like the currency questions, which has finally been partially answered as a limited one time offer with no way for sellers who have already signed up to MP easy way to switch to it.

Irony: eBay expecting sellers to have all these item specifics for listings yet when sellers ask eBay for specifics in regards to MP it is almost impossible to get them to share. Also "nice" that many things that were told to us about MP have automagically changed/been downgraded shortly after being implemented.

That would be frustrating if you were given no notice at all. My ability to list new listings or revise was disabled on June 1 as I missed the deadline but in my case, I was sent at least 3 messages about it in May so I knew that it was coming.  I hadn't signed up yet as I was debating on which bank to use and the payout currency in but once I did figure that out and gave ebay the information, things were back to normal.  I haven't been switched to MP yet though...they just wanted the info so that I could be switched when it was time.

I agree that was true in the beginning but I've found that the majority of the information has been available for months now.  The only thing that  we did not know for sure was the payout currency but that was because they hadn't figured that out either.  It's interesting that it didn't seem to occur to them that Canadians would be concerned about that until some Canadians were already registered but at least once we did express our concerns, they came up with a compromise. One thing that they didn't do though was communicate very well that there was going to be a $US option at some point.

@fergua3

Two have not been told to sign up yet. Both are relatively new and slow.

The other I have put all the listings "on vacation" until I see my first sale under MP has gone through.

I haven't had any "threatening" messages, but then I used to answer letters for federal Cabinet ministers and my base starts with bomb threats.

I'm not so fortunate as you.  I got my first warning June 1 and as of today, June 8 i can no longer list, revise etc.

I must confess i'm getting pretty ticked off with this chaotic rollout of MP.  Some get months to sign up, others are forced in in days.  Why is it so difficult to treat everyone the same?   Maybe certain groups are more favoured than others?

It's difficult to trust that Ebay is going to manage my money responsibly and reliably when every day i find a new gliche on their site and they just seem to make rules up as they go along and change how they do things from day to day.

I've got some hard thinking to do between now and the 15th..

I'm guessing that it has less to do with being 'favoured'  and more to do with the messanging/email system not sending out messages when they are supposed to.  Either way, it can be frustrating as heck.

I agree too that the site does seem to have a lot of problems lately. But based on posts that I've read from US sellers who have been in MP anywhere from 4 months - 2 years, I do think that once everything is set up and figured out on ebay's part for the Canadian side of things, that MP will be fairly smooth and consistent.

I agree with you. This could have easlily happened and I actually love the way ssales12 worded the entire post. Put a spoof on the entire mis-managed payment situation because hey, that is exactly what it is. Even eBay can't deny that.  Great to see some dry humor on an otherwise super stressful scenario! And like it or not there is a lot of truth in the comments they made. First time a comment regarding this situation made me chuckle instead of feeling sick to my stomach!

I salute you ssales12!
