My first Managed Payments invitation came today...how long do i really have?

I was 'invited' to enroll in Managed Payments today.  If i join by May 18th i will get 20% off FVF's in June.  The last line says "Please ensure to complete your registration by May 31st to ensure there are no interruptions to your account "

So how long can i delay this?  I know there are people on here that were invited last year and still have not switched over and are selling still.  How are they doing it?

I was really hoping to make it to the end of this year before being forced to switch.  I'm going to largely be done selling on Ebay by then and really don't want to go through the aggravation, expense and fantastic inconvenience if i can avoid it.

All advice appreciated.

Imo you just won the MP lottery!

Highly, highly doubt you'll be able to continue beyond June much less through to the end of the year.

I had previously been getting their April 27th deadline threats, to which I gave them a big middle finger... now they're threatening me with a May 31st deadline.  I'm going to give them a middle finger about that too. I am NEVER signing up for managed payments. I am never giving ebay my bank account details. Hell Paypal doesn't have that info either (my account dates from a time long ago, in a galaxy far far away when you didn't need to link a bank account.... you simply spent the dollars in your paypal balance on other things).

There doesn't need to be any "aggravation,  expense and inconvenience", I've been using Managed Payment for 8 months and have had none of those things.

My advice, forget the horror stories you've read about, complete the sign up and get on with business.

so what exactly will happen if i do not sign up?  My understanding is that at some point  i will no longer be able to create new listings or revise current litings.  Is that it?

So my current listings will just continue as before, people can buy them and pay with Paypal and the money will go into my Paypal account.  Correct?

Correct. And then you simply sell on other sites and ebay loses a small slice of income and thinks of a new way to screw over sellers next year.

What happens?

  • You can't do new listings
  • You can't revise existing listings
  • I'm about 90% sure your existing Fixed Price listings will be converted to MP but the money will go into a void which you won't be able to access until you are fully registered
  • Any Auction listings you have will continue under PayPal until they end

While I understand people don't like change I do not understand why there is so much reluctance to switch to a system that isn't really that much different. Especially given there are very few Marketplace options that don't have a similar setup (and higher fees as well). The few that still leave payment up to the seller have the downside of little if any traffic.

I can only speak for myself, but I am really reluctant because I can't spend the US$ sales on other stuff since PayPal is accepted almost everywhere I buy stuff.

As for what happens if you don't sign up... I had an April 29 deadline. And since I got that email, I did not sell a single thing... I didn't try to revise a listing or list a new one though.

Question for you, did you sign up for US dollars.  If yes when they ask the question do you sell on multiple sites ie CDN, USA etc.  Did you only indicate USA?  If you did not sign up for US just ignore my question.  Thanks

Just so you know I saw your question...........

I only sell on .ca for the past 12 years. When shipping caps for Media started I moved everything to .ca

FYI - The id I'm posting with is still with PayPal, I just use this id for my non-selling junk, I think eBay figures I'm such low volume on this id they haven't bothered to move me to MP. All my other id's are in Managed Payments now.

i sell on both .ca and .com.  90% of my sales are on .com.

so is the money i get from $C sales kept separate from the $US sales?  If i choose to have the money deposited in a Canadian funds bank account (very likely) when are the $US sales converted to $C?

I'm asking because i see a scenario where i make a $US sale, it is immediately converted to $C, then when ebay takes store fees or other fees (other than the initial FVF) it gets converted back to $US to pay those fees.  So i lose twice on conversion fees instead of just once as now.

And same question for when i have to refund buyers.  Is a $US sale converted immediately to $C, sits in my account until my scheduled redemption day and if there is a chargeback, converted back to $US, so again i lose another set of conversion fees.  If this is the way the system works than this is really an extra cash cow for Ebay; making a bundle on coverting currencies back and forth, back and forth.

As to Ebay not releasing funds i make on sales, if i don't sign up for MP: I can't see this being legal.  They can deny me the ability to create and revise listings, even boot me off their site if they want.  But i will have to check into the legality of them holding hostage money from sales i have made on their site.  That is a very different thing.

Paypal charges conversion fees and I feel like MP has similar fees. Since you plan to leave ebay anyways if they force MP on you just try to sell one not too high worth item with MP and see what it charges you.

I moved to MP few weeks ago and had a sale go through MP and I liked it. I got the money in my bank within few days and it's exactly the amount that was calculated. Paypal is more headache in terms of their retarded 3.5% or more based on the country and other random stuff. Paypal is not a better option. At least with MP I have to deal only with ebay lol.... but ye selling locally always better. Where I live people don't really buy gowns but US buyers always do buy gowns and they are my market mainly...

Given that it appears that the US dollar account on Canadian soil deposit option is just around the corner and that the delays in moving some Canadian sellers into Managed Payments appear to be the result of not having this option ready, I’d say that you likely don’t have much more time than what eBay suggests.

There is a Q&A session of sorts tomorrow with a Managed Payments specialist. I would recommend you post your questions in advance to the thread where the session is being held after making sure those questions haven’t already been asked:
