Managed Payments...Invited May 4, Threatened June 1

The timeline for registering for managed payments seems to have drastically reduced.  I've been reading for months how people have been able to keep listing and selling normally for a long time after being 'invited' to managed payments.  At least nearly 3 months for most.

I was invited on May 4.  Here is the email i just received from ebay:

You have missed the deadline to register for eBay to manage your payments and, effective today, your ability to create, relist, and revise listings has been disabled. In addition, if you do not register by June 15th, all your live listings on eBay will be removed as well. To re-enable your listing capabilities, complete the registration here.

Take these simple steps to get back to selling:
Verify your information
Provide a chequing account
Continue selling as usual
Register now

If you have questions, you can request a call from one of our Payments team members on the Help Hub here - we’re here for you.

Please click here to register for managed payments now.

This is the first i've heard of someone's listings all being ended.  I was planning to start looking into registering this month, with an expectation of being forced into MP by late July....this is the timeline i've come to expect from reading other members posts.

I experimented and i am still able to list and revise but that may stop abruptly very soon.

I was going to use my regular chequing account to register with.  I've seen that many people open a special account just for Ebay.  Why?

Most of my items listed on Ebay are items purchased through garage and yard sales or auctions, so I opened a special account simply to be able to see what my profit/loss is with Ebay.  I also felt I wanted an account totally separate from any of my other banking, so less chance of scammers/hackers/fraudsters.  Not sure if I'm just paranoid or whether having a separate account would prevent the chance of anyone getting at my other accounts.

This is my first complete month of Managed Payments and have found it relatively simple to navigate through.  I just downloaded my first month's report and I DO like that I don't have to go to Paypal for a separate report.   I understand those who are using Ebay as a good part of their  livelihood are finding things somewhat less user-friendly than those of us who are just into it for a hobby, so their input to your question will probably be more valuable than this part-timer's advice.

Re: Managed Payments...Invited May 4, Threatened June 1

I just switched over to Managed Payments and I agree with what seems to be a speeded up process. I just received an e-mail maybe a week or two ago letting me know that I would eventually have to switch to managed payments and then all of this sudden this morning I have an e-mail saying I must switch by June 15th or all of my listings would be ended. That doesn't seem like much of a gradual easing in of it! 🙂 I went ahead and signed up and I did open another chequing account to use just for eBay. I didn't like the idea that they would have free reign to my regular account - they don't only just have the right to put money into the account, they can also take money out and I don't trust them not to screw that up somehow and not take money that they don't have any right to... It was very easy to open an additional chequing account online and I just pdf'd the deposit form and that was good enough for the eBay documentation requirement.

I have a question though - so I am now in managed payments but there is money owing to ebay from my last invoice to now - will I get one final invoice that will be debited from my paypal as usual or are they going to try and take that money from my chequing account?

I'm really not looking forward to this - it's going to make shipping less easy - I already get great rates through Paypal shipping and have no interest in using eBay's... so now I am going to have to transfer the shipping info manually into paypal since they won't automatically have it anymore...

As per my other thread, I got the "DISABLED" email about an hour ago... I'm still able to list and just put up seperate listings on ebay.ca in CAD and ebay.com in USD. I'm just going to quit ebay selling altogether once they actually follow thru on that threat to end my existing listings. I really do NOT need to keep giving ebay a 9% commission on my sales. I have other market resources for selling where its either completely free to list, or minimal cost per list. Pinkbike for example for bicycle parts, frames and complete bikes... I pay $60USD for a full year premium account there and I can put up an unlimited number of posts in their buy-sell section. I'm sure their are other sites for gaming miniatures I can find where its as minimal an expense to sell on.

Re: Managed Payments...Invited May 4, Threatened June 1

The only reason i can see for opening a whole new account is to prevent a repeat of what happened on Etsy a few years ago, where thousands of selers had thousands of dollars taken from their bank accounts or credit cards overnight.  Etsy also uses Adyen, which is what Ebay is now using.

Now according to Etsy, it was a technical gliche that caused all the money to be raided from sellers bank accounts and credit cards.  The total was in the millions iirc.

Etsy eventually returned all the money, but it took weeks and many selers that were effected had nsf charges on bank accounts, overlimit charges on credit cards and damaged credit scores.   I never heard if Etsy made good on the damage their 'gliche' caused.

I'd forgotten this and was just reviewing the notes i made to myself on my managed payment strategy, when the fateful day came.  So i guess i will open a new bank account.   What online accounts are the best option for someone like me who is not very tech savvy.  eg i have no idea how to create a pdf to submit to ebay.

Well for one reason at least is to open separate bank account is for taxes if you have many listings and transactions, it makes it easier and CRA auditor lets you faster of the hook (assuming all else is tip-top).

I got the same message today too. Never finished the managed payments thing. I'm confused about whether a US dollar account is best or a Canadian dollar account is best. I sell in both currencies. Someone here mentioned on another thread that a US dollar 'chequing' account in Canada will cause you to have double the transfer fees. I'm totally confused. I can open any type of account - easy enough - but just unsure which is best.  Do I go with Cdn chequing account or a US chequing account  in Canada? What I want to know is which will give me the most money in the pocket.

Re: Managed Payments...Invited May 4, Threatened June 1

I just made a second chequing account in my already existing bank - Simplii (offshoot of CIBC) that way it will be easy to transfer money from the eBay account to my regular bank account online - and they didn't give me a hassle about opening a second bank account. There is a form they have online with the account if you want to have your employer do direct deposits to your account that has your name, address and account number - all the info eBay is insisting on to sign on to managed payments - so I just saved the form as a PDF and attached it to my managed paments sign up - all was approved within minutes so they are obviously fine with that as your banking proof - HTH!

I’m figuring the rationale for the shorter turnaround is that Those In Charge are figuring that since the Managed Payments changeover was first announced many months ago, sellers have been doing their homework and preparing their game plans in advance of their notifications to register.

Using your regular chequing account is a huge mistake! eBay deposits go in but also fees for eBay and all kinds of other "needs". go out. if you combine that with your personal finances you are giving eBay complete access to everything in your life.

After a few weeks you will see the problem. Then you have  to repeat the entire bank account connection MP process when you  open a new account. Your eBay MP deposits can be delayed for weeks if the connection fails.

Paypal was seperate from your personal finances before. Get a cheap chequing account (EG: scotia $4.95/mnth and  many get a free one online. Keep eBay separate.

If you're doing 6 figures in US dollars you need to consult someone to advise you because the CAD has been rising for two weeks. I

If you're USA revenue suffers you may want to keep it at home. Either way eBay is not threatening you with MP.  That ship sailed and now is water under the bridge.

You may want to dive in when things are slow to get up and running.

Mine is Scotiabank $4.95 mnth less the seniors discount =free. Most of the younger whipper snappers find a free one online.

With respect to sending info to eBay I would be happy to help you but that may be scary coming from a stranger.  Call eBay's help line but specifically ask for a Managed Payments specialist. After you get set up your Seller Hub will change to Managed Payments and you will have an MP specialist Help Box on the first page. Most of the standard eBay CSR's can't answer MP questions.

You will be fine tech savvy or not. It takes some patience for the process and you have lots of cheerleaders!

I looked at your listings. I'm not millitary but my dad was a pilot and we spent some good times in a 172. You have some great stuff!

The 'invitation' I received on May 11 did say to update by May 31 or I wouldn't be able to add new listings, revise etc so it didn't come as a surprise.   It might have stated that on yours as well..it's not that obvious and easy to miss unless you scrolled past the first part.

Re: Managed Payments...Invited May 4, Threatened June 1

That's what I received today. But there is no deadline. So I guess there will be a follow up email from this giving me a deadline I assume.

Any idea how long after seeing this can I expect the deadline?

By the way - to change bank account on MP you just put the sales on vacation mode, change the account and then good to go.

Looking at number of sales it's 50/50 Canada and US but when looking at the dollar value, it's clearly tilted towards US with higher spenders south of the border that's been the case for years.

My calculated prices are in CAD but list prices in USD. I don't mind to get the extra dollars. The balance will tilt again as it always did with CAD / USD relationship.

You can't chage back to USD once you go for CAD. You can ALWAYS open a new ebay account with CAD (mandatory). So why not go with USD on your existing account if you can. If you want to take advantate of CAD exchange rate, open a new account. At this time the exchange rate is not good enough where I would think it's worth that effort yet and start with a separate .CA account with zero feedback.

Re: Managed Payments...Invited May 4, Threatened June 1

I got 2 messages yesterday from eBay>BOTH had a June 15th deadline(1 message titled"Getting paid on eBay just got simpler", containing the message "update your account details by June 15th"....blah,blah,blah and the other titled"Your ability to create, relist, and revise listings have been disabled", containing the message"Since you missed your deadline to update your account details, your ability to create, relist, and revise listings have been disabled. In addition, if you do not register by June 15th, all your live listings on eBay will be removed as well. Update your account details today, including adding your bank account information, so you can list again"....blah,blah,blah....

I ended all my listings mid-April, BEFORE the first deadline of April 29th. as I am NOT signing up for MP. I have my own reasons for not signing up...I have been selling on another venue for about 2-1/2years...

and there are options/alternatives and other choices for selling venues...There is more to online selling than eBay...there is life beyond/after eBay!

e-Bay is really stupid. I keep getting the same dumb messages when it should be obvious to anyone with even half a brain that I have no intention of signing up for their latest Managed Payments scam. They even offered a ridiculous $15 incentive as if that would make anyone sign up for this. How stupid do they think people are?

exactly! also got that $15 "incentive"= that's not an incentive; that's a joke!

....might have considered a $1500 deposit to a bank account...LOL!

That was quite a while ago; eBay has been speeding up its schedule this year, probably confident that they have worked out most of the bugs.  (Many people would probably beg to differ.)

They gave you a whole month?  With two more weeks before your listings are taken down?  Lucky you!

I myself finally got the dreaded message this very morning.  And I have 14 days, no more, before I am locked out and have my listings taken down, without any grace period in-between.  And I never had any prior deadline, invitation, or "make sure your info is up-to-date"; this is the very first message I have received on this matter.  (Though I can't exactly claim I didn't know it was coming...)

This is the first i've heard of someone's listings all being ended.

From what I understood, common knowledge was that BIN listings would simply not be renewed once they expired.  I guess eBay stepped up their game on this part.

(I'd very much like to know how this applies to auctions: will they be taken down abruptly, or be allowed to run their course?  I'm not sure I want to try and find out...)

I was planning to start looking into registering this month, with an expectation of being forced into MP by late July....this is the timeline i've come to expect from reading other members posts.

That was my impression/plan as well.  Got a nasty wake-up call instead.  (I guess I only have myself to blame for this.)

To everyone else not enrolled in MP and with no intention of doing so (we all have our own reasons) who are wondering how much time you have left, the answer is: "Probably less than you think."  Plan accordingly.

I experimented and i am still able to list and revise but that may stop abruptly very soon.

Beware that any sale you make past your deadline could be construed as falling under MP, with the money being withheld until you enroll.  (Whether or not it will is anyone's guess.)

I would simply cancel those if that happens. Ebay's whole DEFECTS penalty is meaningless when I'm quitting selling on ebay.

Re: Managed Payments...Invited May 4, Threatened June 1

I received the same email. Here's the thing for me anyway. I am under NO circumsatances registering for their managed payments unless they by some miracle fix this stupid circumstance. I was planning to retire at the end of 2021 anyway as I will be retirement age then.

I was also under the impression that in the beginning when they first starting talking about leaving PayPal that it would not be fully until 2023. So that would have worked out fine for me. Once again they changed their minds and bumped it up.

The one thing that irks me the absolute most is the 25 cent extra fee they intend to charge for each separate item in a combined order.  I often sell 10 or more items in one order and if eBay thinks they are going to get an extra 2.50 or more because I have made a reputation for myself by giving buyers a discount on multiple item purchases, they can think again. Why should they benefit from all my years of hard work to establish this reputation? If they don't want my money for fees, then fine. I will either go elsewhere, go solo or retire 6 months earlier than expected. I have all the options here. This is like a slap in the face to a longtime consistent seller who has always tried to play by their ever increasing rules. Enough is enough!
