Can I offer local pick up only? Do I have to ship items?

You can offer Local Pickup only but it will severely limit the number of people who might find or want your item. What leads you to ask?

My items are far too large for shipping. Costs would be almost as much or more than the items are selling for

While bulky and heavy items are not usually a good choice for mail order, I've noticed some very large items being sold here. Cast iron benches. Mattresses. I bought an oriental rug 12'x15' on eBay about a decade ago, delivered 'free' from Montreal to Ottawa. Sometimes we should let our customers decide if the shipping is worth it. YMMV.
