CRA Request For Tax Identification Number (SIN)

Ebay.ca requested that I submit my Tax Identification Number (SIN) as per CRA requirements.  I did send the info and got an acknowledgement back from Ebay.  In the letter they stated "We will make this information available to you following submission to the CRA".  I have not received this information.  I called Ebay and they didn't have a clue as to what I was talking about.  Said they would get back to me but sofar nothing.  Has anyone else had a similar experience?

My understanding is that eBay is requesting the SIN for those who reach the limits ($2,800 or 30 items) starting January 2025, which would mean it would not be for sales in 2024. I have seen this topic brought up many times (look back in the forum here) and have seen mixed responses as to the date. Myself I don't think we will get a copy of the "after submission to CRA" amount until next year (for the year 2025).

Best thing to do (I already did this as I do every year) is if you go to sellers hub under Sales Reports you can use drop down menu to ask for "Last Year" and it will generate a report for Jan 1 - Dec. 31/24 and it shows it with Total Sales (Gross Sales) - this includes "Tax Collected by eBay; Selling Costs - eBay Fees Totals for year; Shipping Costs (assuming you use eBay labels), then the Net Sales. There are of course all your other expenses of which eBay would not be aware but at least with an eBay generated report I would hope the numbers would jive with those they will eventually send, but again I don't think that happens for 2024.

The phone clerks work for a subcontractor in Utah. Most are pretty useless for Canadian enquiries, although the Philippino reps likely have a cousin working in Winnipeg or Toronto.

If you have enquiries, use the social media. Those are actual trained eBay employees.

In the letter they stated "We will make this information available to you following submission to the CRA". I have not received this information.

What information were you expecting?

The SINs will theoretically be used to give CRA our gross eBay incomes. When we get them, if we get them, we can use them to compare our own records, and take our deductions (which eBay has no clue about) before adding our net eBay income to our tax submission.

Are you otherwise signed up for Managed Payments?

In addition to your SIN, eBay needs your checking account information to transfer your customers' payments to your bank account.

Note that until you've been selling for 90 days and sold 25 items your payments will be held until tracking shows delivered, or in 30 days if there's no tracking. They can hold the payment for the full 30 days if you're selling in a high risk category.

The phone reps have a terrible reputation for getting you off the phone as soon as possible even if that means giving you the advice you want to hear instead of the advice you need to have.
