whys the conversion rate from US dollars to Canadian higher on Ebay then on conversion converters?

Because the converter sites are giving the "mid-market rate" which is really only used for favourite customers-- like banks transferring millions of dollar or euros or yen.
The rate to compare is your local bank branch's "retail " rate. And even there if you walk across the street you may get a better rate at a rival bank, or your credit union, or a private money exchange.
