Purchase of an item

I ordered an item from Japan.  Am I required to pay import/duty on the item?  Nothing was mentioned when ordering.  I paid the cost of the item plus shipping.

I'm now receiving messages regarding import/duty additional charges.  Is this valid or a scam?

Thank you.

If the email is coming from a courier such as DHL they are requiring payment for customs, duties and taxes prior to delivery. With Canadapost you should be able to pick up at your closest depot and pay duties at that time. The part about any applicable duties and taxes 'should' show up in your purchased listing  below shipping details.

PS. Does the email show up in your eBay mail?

Yes, you are required to pay any duty, taxes and customs processing fees the carrier may charge you at the time of delivery. The seller’s description may not have stated that but the listing page will have a message to the effect that “international purchases are subject to customs charges.”

Who is sending you the emails?

Nothing was mentioned when ordering.

It is your duty as a Canadian importer to be aware of the costs of duty and sales taxes.

You pay duty on items valued over $150Cdn.

You pay sales taxes on items valued over $40Cdn.

There is unlikely to be anything dutiable since Canada has a Free Trade Agreement with Japan.  (CPTPP- the current version of the Trans-Pacific Partnership). But if the item was actually made in China, which is not part of the treaty, there might be duty.

The sales tax is the same you would pay at your local Canadian Tire, or the The Bay , or Staples.
